What is a sentence?

THE SENTENCE

A sentence is a set of words that are put together to


express a complete thought; typically contains a
subject and a predicate.

According to the intention or purpose, there are


What is a declarative sentence?

A declarative sentence simply makes a direct statement or


expresses an opinion. In other words, it makes a
declaration. This kind of sentence ends with a period.

Examples:

She plays the piano, and he sings along. (makes a statement)

My friend is an excellent engineer. (expresses an opinion)


What is an interrogative sentence?

An interrogative sentence asks a question, and it ends


with a question mark.

Examples: falling intonation

When are you going to turn in your writing assignment?

Do you know what the weather will be tomorrow?

What is an exclamatory sentence?

An exclamatory sentence is a sentence that expresses


great emotion such as excitement, surprise, happiness,
anger, sorrow, sadness, etc., and ends with an exclamation
point.

Examples:

I won´t do that!

I got an A on my book report!!!!!!

I’m very, very sorry!!


What is an imperative sentence?

An imperative sentence gives a command or makes a


request. It usually ends with a period.

Examples:

Close the door, please.

Sit down now.

Don´t lie to me.

Independent Clause
An independent clause is a group of words that contains a
subject and verb and expresses a complete thought.
I had to take a taxi to go to the office.
Dependent Clause
A dependent clause is a group of words that contains a
subject and verb but does not express a complete thought.
Because I woke up late this morning

Compound-Complex Sentences

The compound-complex sentences must have two or more


independent clauses (making it compound) and one or more
dependent clauses (making it complex), one of which is
joined by a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) and one by a
subordinating conjunction.
What kinds of sentence structures can we

So, in order to have a compound-complex sentence, you
must have at least three clauses, two of which are
independent.

Find below some compound-complex sentences. Put parentheses around
each clause and then label each clause with an I for “independent” or a D
for “dependent.”

1. I love eating turkey at Thanksgiving, but my friend’s family eats lasagna

because his cousin is allergic to poultry.

2. After I swept the garage, I asked my dad for my allowance, but he only

laughed at my request.

3. Ron is running for student council president, but he will not win unless he

gets the seniors’ vote.


In groups, write a short text in which you include the four types of
sentences (simple, compound, complex, compound-complex). Share
it with the class.
