WEEK 10

ACTIVITY CONTENT:
DATE : 9 December 2022 (Friday)
TOPIC : Pest and diseases management
TIME : 8.00 am – 12.30 pm
PLACE : Share Farm UiTM Jasin Campus
OBJECTIVES : 1. To control pest and diseases from damaging the crops
2. To produce high quality of food
3. To increase crops production

1. INTRODUCTION

Pest and diseases in agriculture is very problematic to our crops. This is because pest
and diseases can damage our crops and reduce the quality of our crops. Pest and disease
is any invertebrate animal, pathogen, parasitic plant or similar or allied organism which
can cause diseases or damage in any crops, tress, shrubs, grasses, or other plants of
substantial value.
This is why we need to control it before the becoming more dangerous to our crops.
There are lots of type and ways to prevent it.

2. NATURE OF WORK DONE

TIME PLACE ACTIVITY REMARKS

7.00a.m-7.30a.m In the morning, we were assembled by group to

Agrotechnology
take attendance for each class in front of the
office
Plantation and Agrotechnology Office with all
the student and Planters Executives.

7.30a.m-8.00a.m We did some exercise and jogging before going

to the farm. Also, were briefed on the task that
we had to complete.

8.00a.m-8.30a.m Share Farm We were given some explaination by the lecturer

UITM Jasin about pest and diseases that mostly or commonly
Campus attack crops.
8.30a.m-8.45a.m We started identify what kind of pest and disease
at our crops as we learned from lecturer and
Planter’s Executive.
8.45a.m-10.00a.m After that, we take the right action to prevent the
pest and disease from attack the crops.
10.00a.m-10.30a.m Afterwards, we were instructed by the Planter’s
Executive to take a 30 minutes break to reset our
energy.
10.30a.m-12.30a.m After that, we go back to our plot to do some
tillage and make sure that infected plants has
given treatment before finishing our works.

6. ASSIGNMENT
- Pest and diseases control techniques:

1. Cultural control:
• Crop rotation
• Trap crops
• Tillage
• Residue management
• Timing of operation
• Resistant varieties
• Purchase quality seeds and healthy plants
• Remove dead and diseased plant foliage

2. Mechanical:
• By using hand

3. Chemical:
• Poison the insect
• Insecticide
• Fungicide
• Bactericide
• Predacide

4. Biological:
• Uses living organisms that are predators to control pests
• Pest have natural enemies in the environment

5. Genetic Pest Control:

• Utilizes biotechnology by gene transfer or genetic manipulation to
make plants resistant to specific pests
7. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

- Types of pest:
1. Insects:
• Segment bodies
• Damage the plant by leaf eating, plant sucking, internal feeding,
stem boring and root feeding
2. Mollusc:
• Soft bodied invertebrate of phylum Mollusca
• Chew irregular holes with smooth edges in leaves and flowers and clip
succulent plant parts. They also chew fruit and young plant bark.

3.Vertebrates :
• Animals belonging to the subphylum vertebrata
• They damage the crop to get a food
4. Nematode:
• Round, slender, threadlike worms
• Causes damage ranging from dark spots on roots to significant amount of root
decay

- Types of diseases:

Abiotic Biotic
Nutritional abnormalities: Fungi:
• mineral deficiency and excess • feed on other organism
• reproduced by spore
• causes soft root, rust curling,
smut, powdery mildew leaf spot
and blight

Pesticide exposure: Bacteria:

• exposed to the herbicide • microscopic
• causes blight, spot, rot
• reproduce by cell division

Environmental pollutants: Virus:

• high level of fluoride in water • sub microscopic
or fluorine gas • causes abnormal growth, mosaic
• reproduce inside host cell
• vector transfer

Extreme weather conditions: Mycoplasma:

• extreme of heat and cold • smallest living things
temperature will kill the plant) • causes yellowing, stunting
• reproduce independently
• vector transfer – insects, mite,
grafting

- Nematode:
• Round, slender, threadlike
worms
• Plant parasite nematodes have a
stylet
• Most live in the soil and feed in
or on plant roots

8. RECOMMENDATION

I recommend we need to use the most effective method to prevent pest and diseases
from damage our crops. I think we need to use chemical method and cultural method.

9. CONCLUSION

In conclusion, pest and diseases management is so important because without it our

crops will be growth not in the healthy ways. That’s why we need to control pest and
diseases so our crops can produce high quality of foods and reduce the chance of
spreading the diseases to others crops.
