Starter & Students will introduced to the topic and told that Thumbs signs
Introduction addition means to join together. Teacher will display the

‘+’ and ‘=’ sign on the board and discuss them. Students
will be told that the answer of joining numbers together is
called ‘sum’. The teacher will be using the terms: join,
add, more, equals, altogether to reinforce their learning.

Explore & Explain Students will be shown an equation on the board and by Open vs closed Inter-locking cubes, ice- 5min
using tangible items students will learn how to add cream sticks
numbers and things together. Teacher will use different
colored inter locking cubes and various other classroom
items to teach them the concept more effectively.

Guided Practice Students will be introduced to ‘build it’ addition cards and Wait time Inter-locking cubes, 10min
some interlocking cubes. They will be asked to build the Build-it cards
given numbers with inter locking cubes and display it on
the table. And conduct a peer evaluation.

Extension Task: A little challenging worksheet for the early


finishers

Differentiated Task: Some differentiated build it cards for


the strugglers.

Independent Students will be asked to attempt the given worksheet Thumbs Worksheet 10min
Practice and check each other’s answers.
