PROPERTIES AND CHANGES OF MATTER

I. Objectives:
At the end of this activity, the students should be able to:
1. Differentiate between physical and chemical properties
2. Differentiate between physical and chemical change
3. To analyze and classify observed changes

II. Introduction

Properties are characteristics used to describe matter. Properties can be

physical or chemical. A physical property can be observed without any change
in the identity of matter. Examples of physical properties are melting point,
boiling point, length, mass, height, volume, etc. Whereas, a chemical property
can be determined with an accompanying change in the identity of matter.
Examples of chemical properties are flammability, biodegradability, stability in
air, etc.
Matter undergoes change from time to time. Changes may be physical or
chemical. In a physical change, no new substance is formed. The change may
be in shape, size, or physical state. Either the molecules are brought closer to
each other in freezing liquid hydrogen and oxygen atom are separated from one
another as in liquid to gas (evaporation).
A chemical change is characterized by the formation of a new substance.
This is brought about by the rearrangement of atoms within a molecule. Thus,
when electric current is passed through water, the atoms of hydrogen and
oxygen are rearranged to form H2 and O2. Chemical bonds are either broken or
formed in a chemical change.
III. Materials:

▪ 1-Tong
▪ 1-glass container
▪ Alcohol lamp
▪ 2-Watch glass
▪ Hot plate
▪ Tripod
▪ Wire gauze
▪ Evaporating dish
▪ Dropper

Reagents:
▪ Ethyl Alcohol
▪ Mossy Zinc
▪ Magnesium Ribbon
▪ Naphthalene
▪ Ice
▪ Filter paper
▪ 0.1 M HCl

IV. Procedures
1. Place a small piece of mossy zinc in a test tube. Add 5 mL of dilute
hydrochloric acid, and observe.
2. Hold a piece of magnesium ribbon using a pair of tongs and ignite in an
alcohol lamp. Observe.
3. Hold a small piece of paper using forceps then burn.
4. Place a piece of ice in a glass. Allow it to stay for ten minutes.
5. Allow a few drops of alcohol (ethyl/isopropyl alcohol) to stand on a glass
surface for five minutes. Observe what happens.
6. Place a pinch of naphthalene (mothball) in a small container suitable for
heating. Cover it with a saucer with water on it. Rest gently in a low flame.
