CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

The K to 12 program embodies a holistic approach to education, ensuring adequate

time for students to master the concepts and skills necessary for excelling in life. The
program focuses on developing productive, well-rounded individuals who are equipped for
challenges in tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and
entrepreneurship.

The Senior High School Curriculum transforms students into competent, skilled, and
values-oriented learners who are relevant in their chosen careers. As a requirement, a matter
of 80 hours of work immersion is given to Grade 12 students to nurture their hard and soft
skills by providing them with hands-on experience or work simulation. The goal of this
curriculum is to develop young minds to be well-equipped for further basic education.

Work immersion is more than just an opportunity for learners to apply what they’ve
learned from school into a work environment. It is an experience where learners can enhance
their knowledge, enrich their social skills and learn from real world practices. They can
acquire and develop essential values and competencies that are crucial for their career such as
time management, adaptability, communication, and problem-solving skills—traits that lay
the foundation for professional success.

The Senior High School work Immersion program is a profound journey for learners,
broadening their horizons and developing their essential skills as they grow into capable and
responsible adults. The on-the-job training program cultivates a sense of adaptability and
work ethic that transitions students from academic life to the real world. Work immersion

CHAPTER II- NARRATIVE OF EXPERIENCES

DAILY REFLECTIVE JOURNAL

FOOD AND BEVERAGE SERVICES (FBS)

DAY 1|March 26, 2023

On the first day of their community-based work immersion, the work immersion
students were oriented to their assigned task by their teacher. However, the unpreparedness of
some of her teammates caused frustration despite her own preparation. While preparing for
decorations, she was overcome with conflicting emotions as some of her teammates were
experiencing health issues, like diarrhea. As a leader, she remained committed to ensuring
everyone was included and worked together to complete the morning’s skirting and
decorating. The afternoon was spent performing table reservations, during which the
immersionist was patient in guiding a teammate struggling with reading and memorization.
After a long day, they finished the task with a smile.

DAY 2|March 27, 2023

It was the second day of the immersionists’ community-based work immersion and
the day of the event that they needed to cater, which was held in barangay Udiao on Frio’s
property. When they began decorating, the immersionist’s expectations clashed with reality.
Although the designs they had ordered were not as good as expected, there were still some
wasted materials due to unforeseen circumstances; however, the team improvised, and
despite setbacks, they successfully decorated the event space. The team spent half the day
preparing for the event, during which the immersionist became exhausted due to some
teammates’ lack of initiative. After successfully decorating the event, the team was allowed
to enjoy it, with some teammates even singing. The immersionist watched with a contented
smile until she fell asleep. After cleaning up the area, the team was treated to delicious food
by the host.

DAY 3|March 28, 2023
On the third day of immersionist community-based work, she was assigned the tasks
of welcoming, greeting, seating the guest, and taking orders. After she finished all the tasks,
she always helped her teammates, and it brought a burning feeling to the immersionist
because she’s the guest, sometimes the videographer and director at the same time, she’s on
the outside of the area with the sun kissing her skin, and her teammates struggled with
memorization and understanding the process even though she demonstrated the task first and
one was absent. However, guiding and sharing knowledge brought her happiness. The
immersionist felt a happy sense of accomplishment. Though the day became easier as
progress was made, she was left feeling drained yet satisfied.

DAY 4|March 29, 2023

On her fourth day of On the Job Training (OJT), she was tasked with serving the food,
presenting the wine, billing, and saying goodbye to the guests. It was a day of multiple tasks,
and doing all of them had proven to be quite tiring. Nevertheless, she displayed sheer
determination and performed well with her teammates.

Overall, it was a long and tiring day, but she was able to finish all the tasks well. She
was grateful for the opportunity to learn and to work alongside a supportive team. As she left
the area that day, she felt a sense of pride in her accomplishments and was eager to go back
for another day of learning in her work immersion experience.

DAY 5|March 30, 2023

The immersionist’s fifth day of her community-based work immersion was like any
other day for her, from waking up early to dressing up in her uniform and heading to work.
The day kicked off with the Room Service Sequence—Table Reservation, and she performed
her tasks with ease and efficiency, but before that, she demonstrated how to do the tasks on
her teammates. She helped them until they all finished their tasks. In the afternoon, the
immersionist and her team members edit their videos and get some rest.

6
DAY 6| March 31. 2023
The sixth day of immersionist work in community-based work Immersion was a new
challenge, it was done with determination and a smile on her face. The task for the day was
to finish the room service sequence: checking service, delivering food, and getting the plate.
This was no easy task, especially as the room was sweltering hot and the electric fan couldn’t
be turned on due to the noise it generated, which you will hear on the video. However, her
unwavering spirit helped her teammates, and together they conquered the challenge. As she
looked back at the past few days, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment. The
perseverance, teamwork, and positivity of everyone made even the toughest tasks seem easy.
On this day, she realized that she was growing as a person, and that filled her with pride. The
challenges of work may seem daunting, but with a little bit of determination, effort, and
positivity, anything is achievable.

DAY 7|April 06, 2023

On the seventh day of the immersionist’s Community-based Work Immersion, the

unexpected occurred. On April 4, while filling out the Annex C form, she noticed an
incomplete task. Determined to complete it, she bravely asked her teacher if they could do the
task after fulfilling the bread and pastry production tasks. Thankfully, her teacher agreed.

On this day, the immersionist and her fellow teammates finished the task effectively;
they learned the finer points of managing an intoxicated person and mastered the art of
handling guest complaints. Although the day was laborious and tiring, they persevered with
teamwork, fueled by their determination. They emerged triumphant, having achieved their
goals for the day.

BREAD AND PASTRY PRODUCTION (BPP)

DAY 1|APRIL 3- MONDAY

First day of their school-based work immersion in Bread and Pastry Production was a
day full of excitement and anticipation. The immersionist and her team were tasked with
making bread with and without fillings and the delicate Petit Four. Together, they make
Pandesal and Cheese Rolls for both types of bread while also making an unexpected decision

14
to transform chiffon cupcake failure into Petite Four glaze and butter icing failure into filling
of petit four glaze. Despite the unexpected setbacks, the team handled the challenge well,
displaying a positive attitude throughout the day. The immersionist was proud to have
successfully finished the tasks with a smile on her faces.

DAY 2|APRIL 4- TUESDAY

It was the second day of their school-based work immersion . The immersionist knew
it would be another day full of challenges. With cake and pastry as their tasks, they set out to
make an Ube Roll Cake and Empanada. However, just as the previous day, they found
themselves facing unexpected difficulties. One of their teammates forgot the crucial Ube
flavoring, but the team was quick to adapt, using Ube condensed milk and doubling the
measure as a replacement. The immersionist took the lead in icing and designing the cake,
resulting in a simple yet elegant cake with a remarkable taste, despite their circumstances.
Upon finishing their assigned duties, the team was given a form to fill out, and the
immersionist noticed some incomplete tasks from their previous work immersion on FBS.
She asked the teacher if they could complete them, and the teacher graciously agreed.

DAY 3|APRIL 5- WEDNESDAY

On day 3 of the immersionist’s job, it was community-based work immersion because

it was holy week. Their task was to make Ube cheese doughnuts and make packaging. The
immersionist performed their task well with great determination, hard work, and cooperation
to finish the task early and clean the area thoroughly. The immersionist felt an immense sense
of accomplishment and pride as they headed out for the day.

18
OVERALL REFLECTION AND SELF APPRAISAL

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts.”
This quote by Winston Churchill encapsulates the two weeks of the immersionist On-the-Job-
Training (OJT) experience. While the journey was full of challenges and obstacles, she
emerged from it stronger and more motivated.

During the initial days of her community-based work immersion, she faced numerous
roadblocks that left her feeling frustrated and discouraged. However, she learned that failure

19
isn’t the end of the world but a stepping stone towards improvement. By learning from her
mistakes, she was able to refine her skills in the field of her choice.

Even in the midst of difficulties, she discovered small joys, such as the feeling of
accomplishment that flowed when she successfully completed the tasks given to her. She
realized that the key to success lies not just in the end result but also in the journey, the
lessons learned, and the efforts made.

Another significant lesson she learned after her OJT journey was the importance of
teamwork. Working together with the team and sharing knowledge made the work process
smoother, faster, and more efficient. The sense of friendship and support among colleagues
played a significant role in boosting their confidence.

The immersionist came out of their work immersion experience stronger and more
resilient. She has developed a newfound confidence and appreciation for the value of hard
work, perseverance, and cooperation. She’s now ready to face whatever challenges come her
way, knowing that she has learned many skills and gained the knowledge needed to succeed.

Her experience with community and school-based work immersion made her realize
that failure is not the end result; it is a part of the journey towards success. If she allows fear
to dictate her actions, she will never experience the fullness of her potential. It is important to
encourage and motivate herself and others to not be afraid to fail but to see it as an
opportunity to learn and grow. As C.S. Lewis once said, “Failures are finger posts on the road
to achievement.” Let yourself not be afraid to embrace your failures and strive to be the best
version of yourself.

OBSERVATION AND INSIGHT

The Immersionists came up with the phrase “failure is not the end result; it’s a
stepping stone towards success” during their community-based work immersion, and it
became their guiding thought as they applied their classroom-acquired knowledge and skills
to the real-world environment. Despite the difficulties of the work immersion, they
persevered and completed the given task.

20
Here are some of the Immersionists’ observations and insights from their community-
based work immersion.

 The majority of her co-trainees are loud and lack initiative.

 Some of her co-trainees are struggling to complete the task.
 A lack of equipment and resource.
 They lack unity, but as the work integration progressed, they learned to cooperate and
work together.
 They gain independence and self-esteem.
 They support one another in times of need.
 They improve their creativity and innovation.

The Immersionists learned an important life lesson through their work: failure is a
vital component of the path to success. She learned that setbacks are only temporary
roadblocks that can be overcome with effort and determination, and she learned to see
mistakes as opportunities for growth rather than defeat. Indeed, the work immersion was a
transforming experience for the Immersionists, as they developed a strong sense of resilience
and motivation that would surely serve them well in their future careers.
