Document Development Exposition: Instructions

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
The main major issues for this document were finding a topic to make instructions for and making
sure they are understood for the target demographic. Fortunately, finding a topic came along
quickly, as my chemistry class was briefly going over dimensional analysis at the time, and the idea
for making instructions about dimensional analysis was formed. As for making sure the audience
understood the instructions, I had the idea of going through the process of setting up an equation
alongside the steps so that the reader could have a semblance of what to do. I learned that having a
specific topic means having a specific audience, and some audiences might have more knowledge
about the topic than others.

First Draft (for peer editing)

The first draft was fairly simple – the steps (and sub-steps) were designed to be simple, as well as
having the example shown as well. The only issue was formatting, but that wouldn’t be solved until
the second draft.

Second Draft (for your packet)

For the second draft, the problem arose that it was somewhat difficult to read because the examples
were included as a sub-sub-step, blending in with the rest of the document. To make the example
more clear, I made it so that it was a brighter color as well as being in the middle of the page instead
as another bullet point to make it more visible. In doing my second draft, I learned that important
information must be highlighted/presented in a way that makes it stand out.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

In the last two drafts, the steps were too simple, where it appeared the examples of the steps did the
“majority” of instructing dimensional analysis. As a result, I’ve decided to remove the sub-steps and
the example from the original steps, and expanded on the said steps in order to make it more clear.
However, I still wanted to keep in an example, so I moved the existing example towards the bottom,
where it will be separate from the rest of the steps. From this, I’ve learned that instructional steps
should be very clear with how they are explained instead of relying on simplicity and the examples to
do the bulk of the instructing.
