Document Development Exposition: Instructions

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
While planning this assignment, I struggled to pick a subject to follow. I wanted to pick something
that was relevant but could also be made into a concise set of instructions. I ended up choosing a
square knot because I knew I would be able to focus on making my steps as specific as possible.

First Draft (for peer editing)

For my first draft, I tried to simplify things as much as possible for the instructions. I spent a lot of
time watching myself make a square knot to make sure that I captured every movement of the
strings with a picture. I knew the instructions needed pictures to accompany them, so I used the
pictures as a rough guideline for where each step started and stopped.

Second Draft (for your packet)

The peer review showed me where any gaps might have been in the instructions, which I thought
was important because if you already know how to do something, things that might feel like
common sense to you might be excluded in the instructions. It really helped me to look outside of
my own perception for a moment, which I think we did a lot in this class.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

For the final draft, I paid close attention to the instructor feedback I was given. There were a lot of
small things that I missed in the second draft, so it was nice to get pointers on what to fix. I felt like
these revisions made a difference in how polished my instructions looked because everything looked
more concise and was very specific.
