Document Development Exposition: Instructions

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
I read the assignment page and brainstormed potential ideas. I did not want to create instructions
for a complex task for the sake of clarity. I eventually realized that creating instructions to purify
water via boiling would be easy to explain and genuinely useful for those in need of clean water.

First Draft (for peer editing)

After editing a peer’s document, I learned techniques that I wanted to use differently for my own
assignment. I realized that choosing to create instructions for a complex task would be a bad idea.
This is due to the fact that it would be difficult to explain intricate instructions to the uninformed. I
also learned that proper grammar and punctuation are very important when creating instructions.
Improper sentence construction and/or word choice can lead to confusion for the reader.

Second Draft (for your packet)

I took the information I learned during the planning and peer editing phases and applied it to my
instructions. In theory I would like to add more to this section, but there’s only so many things I can
say about writing instructions to boil water.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

I read the feedback I received from my professor and made the necessary corrections to the
document. Notable differences between the second draft and this version include no highlighting,
minor grammar corrections and increased clarity on several steps.
