Document Development Exposition: Instructions

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
It took time for me to come up with something that I wanted to give instructions on. I wanted it to be
applicable but not difficult to execute and I landed on how to tie a tie. At the time I thought it would
be a lot easier than it was, I just didn’t think about the difficulty in explaining nuanced movements.

First Draft (for peer editing)

The instructions themselves were difficult to read as they were closer to paragraphs than bullet
points and I did not include any images detailing the process or any steps at all. This left the
instructions more incoherent than anything.

I didn’t use the full page to the best of my ability and left a lot of the page looking like a report. I had
a lot of trouble trying to put into words the correct kind of movements to complete certain steps and
it remained unclear for most of the submissions.

Second Draft (for your packet)

For this submission I sacrificed the form of the instructions for more colorful images. The biggest
problem I faced was making the instructions readable while provided supporting images. I only
added colorful images instead of helpful images and I think the focus I put on that was the biggest
detriment to this submission as well as the unnecessary detail.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

After receiving feedback on my initial post, I finally changed the format of the written text to bullet
points and got rid of a lot of the distracting detail. I cleaned up the chunky paragraphs into more
streamlined points and ordered them. I also got rid of most of the pictures and added just one that
shows every step of the process.
