Title: The Centre of Gravity

Aim: To find the center of gravity of an irregular shape

Material/Apparatus
● Cardboard ‘in the form of an irregular shape’
● Plumb line
● Stand
● Clamp

Procedure:

1. The cardboard was hung by the hole from the clamp and then the plumb line was
attached to the clamp.
2. A line was drawn across the cardboard where the string hung.
3. The process was repeated by hanging the cardboard from the second hole

Observations/Results:

When the cardboard was hung onto the clamp, the cardboard was then spun to make sure
it was loose. After the cardboard stopped spinning, the plum line was used to measure a
third of its center of gravity and then a line was drawn. After two more measures, the
center of gravity can be easily observed- the point where all the lines intersect.

Analysis:

The center of gravity, also known as the center of mass, is the point from which all
weight is considered to act. To find the center of gravity in a regular shape, the two lines
of symmetry must be found. And the point where the two lines intersect is the shape’s
center of gravity. In the irregular shape, in this case the cardboard, the center of gravity is
wherever the most of its mass is. Because there is no base on the cardboard, the plumb
line helped to locate where the center of gravity was on the cardboard. To verify the point
where all the lines intersect is the center of gravity, the cardboard was taken off the clamp
and the point where all of the lines intersect was balanced on a finger. If the cardboard
balances then the center of gravity was found.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, the center of gravity was found by punching three holes in the
cardboard, then attaching it to the clamp. A plumb line was then attached to the clamp to
help measure the center of gravity of the cardboard.

Reflection;

I learnt how to find the center of gravity of irregular shapes and the real life meaning to
it. This can be used in real life for those who do sports. Athletes can go faster and change
direction easier, if they bend their legs and get lower to the ground. This can increase
their stability which allows the runner to adjust greater force production by the legs.
