Week 1: direct and inverse variation

y
Direct variation = y=kx. K= .
x
Example: Since 𝑥 varies directly as 𝑦, then the equation is 𝑦 = 𝑘𝑥. Substitute the given values of 𝑦 and 𝑥 to solve for 𝑘 in the equation.

Solution 1:

1. List the given: x1 = 35; y1 = 7; what is the value of y2 when x2 = 25?

2. Solve for k. k=y/x. = 7/35. K = 1/5.
3. Substitute and solve for y. y=kx = y=1/5(25). Y =5.

Solution 2:

Y1/x1 = y2/x2.

1. Group y1 over x1 and y2 over x2. 7/35 = y2/25.

2. Cross multiply. 175/35. = 5.

Inverse variation = y=k/x. k = yx.

Example 1: x1 = 10; y1 = 48; x2 = 32; y2 = ?

Solution 1

1. Write the given. Solve for k. k = yx. K = (48)(10). K = 480.

2. Substitute. Y2 = 480/32. Y2 = 15.

Solution 2

1. Substitute into x1 y2 = x2. 10(48) = 32y.

2. Divide. 480/32 = 32/32.
3. Y2 = 15.
