Sem: OCT 2021– FEB 2022

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 1 (CO1:PO2 & CO2:PO3)

COURSE OUTCOMES:

CO1 : Analyse reinforced concrete and steel sections in accordance with the relevant
standards. (C4).
CO2 : Design solution for concrete and steel structures with appropriate
consideration for public safety and environmental. (C5).
CO3 : Adapt appropriate techniques to reinforced concrete structure and steel design
problems with an awareness of the limitations. (P5).

PROGRAM OUTCOMES:

PO2/PLO3: Identify and analyse well-defined engineering problems reaching

substantiated conclusions using codified methods of analysis specific to
their field of activity.
PO3/PLO3: Design solutions for well-defined technical problems and assist with the
design of systems, components or processes to meet specified needs with
appropriate consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal,
and environmental considerations.
PO4/PLO2: Conduct investigations of well-defined problems; locate and search relevant
codes and catalogues, conduct standard tests and measurements.

PROBLEM SCENARIO
The Ministry of Sarawak Public Transport is intended to start a new light rapid transit (LRT)
building in Kuching using the LRT design concept prepared by Architect Summer Sdn Bhd. As
an Assistant Engineer in the firm, you and your team are appointed to prepare a design report .
You must submit the report within a week. Your task is to carry out the design of the concrete
slab and beam at underground floor level of the LRT building.
TASKS

1. Figure 1 shows the underground floor level of a LRT building. Using your own words,
briefly explain the objective of reinforced concrete design for the underground floor level
of the LRT building design. (CO1-PO2)(C2).
(5 marks)
2. The design data given for a LRT building are as the following details:
Beam size = 225 mm x 500 mm
Characteristic strength of concrete = 30 N/mm2
Characteristic strength of steel = 500 N/mm2
Permanent action (excluding self-weight) = 1.5 kN/m2
Variable load = 4.0 kN/m2
Density of concrete = 25 kN/m3
Fire Exposure = REI 90
Exposure condition = XC1
Slab thickness = 150 mm

Your design report should include:

i. Calculate the loading subjected to the Slab 1-2/C-D and then draw bending moment diagram
for the panel. (CO1PO2)(C3)(5 marks)

ii. Provide the main reinforcement design of the slab panel 1-2/C-D at short span only.
(CO2PO3)(C3)(6 marks)

iii. Check the serviceability limit requirements of the slab (deflection and crack) by
considering the primary section at the mid span have similar reinforcement as in Q2ii.
(CO2PO3) (C4)(6 marks)

iv. Determine the design loads acting to the Beam 2/A-D if the beam received a load of 17.5
kN/m transferred from the Slab 1-2/A-D. Then, determine the effective flange width of the
beam if the beam and slab are cast monolithically. (CO1PO2)(C4)(7 marks)

v. Design the main reinforcement for the beam at the maximum hogging moment.
(CO2PO3)(C4)(6 marks)

vi. Check for shear at the internal supports of the continuous beam. (CO2PO3)(C4)(5 marks)
vii. Due to the increment of the surrounding population, an overwhelming number of users will
lead to the increment of the applied load. Consider the moment by the additional load is one-
third of the maximum sagging moment. Hence, determine the adequacy of the provided main
reinforcement and the shear link. (CO2PO3)(C5)(10 marks)
