or do maintenance on parts that contain hexavalent chromium. Chromated prim-
ers, Alodines, and corrosion inhibiting sealants used in the manufacture and
assembly of components may contain hexavalent chromium. Emissions that are
created when you weld or thermally cut metal alloys may contain hexavalent
chromium. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) sets man-
datory limits on exposure to chromium dust (29 CFR 1910.1000).
WARNING: DO NOT GET HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM ON YOUR SKIN. REPEATED SKIN CON-
TACT CAN CAUSE DERMATITIS AND SKIN ULCERS. DIRECT EYE CONTACT
WITH HEXAVALENT CHROMATE DUSTS CAN CAUSE EYE DAMAGE. AFTER YOU
TOUCH HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM PARTS, CLEAN YOUR HANDS BEFORE YOU EAT
OR SMOKE. GET SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FROM YOUR EMPLOYER. OBEY
GOVERNMENT AND OSHA REGULATIONS WHEN YOU DISCARD PARTS THAT CON-
TAIN HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM.

REPAIR GENERAL

1. General

A. Titanium Skin Repairs.

WARNING: DO NOT WELD TITANIUM SKIN CRACKS UNLESS AN ARGON FILLED

WELDING CABINET IS AVAILABLE.

(1) Repairs to weld cracks are not recommended, because they must be
done in the identical conditions as the original weld. If not, the
repaired welds can become contaminated.

B. Inconel 625 Skin Repairs.

(1) Cracks up to 6 in. (152,4 mm) in the Inconel 625 skin can be
welded. Cracks greater than 6 in. (152,4 mm) must be repaired by a
patch that makes a continuous surface. If a skin cannot be repaired
by patching, it must be replacement by the applicable higher
assembly.

NOTE: A maximum of three repairs of not more than 4 in. (101,6

mm) in total length are permitted in any one 12 in. (304,8
mm) square area.

2. Rivet Removal and Installation.

NOTE: See Table 601 for drill bit and rivet shank sizes used in the
removal and installation of rivets in the exhaust nozzle and
centerbody.

A. Removal and Installation procedures.

(1) To remove a countersunk rivet, punch the center of the countersunk

rivet head. Drill only through the rivet head using the recommended
drill size shown in Table 601.

(2) Support the skin with a reaction block and drive out the rivet
using a blind punch of slightly smaller diameter than the rivet
shank.

(3) Measure the rivet hole to make sure that the diameter is correct
for the specified rivet. Use an oversize rivet for replacement if
necessary.

(4) Blind rivets are removed as described in step 2. A. (1), except

that it is not necessary to punch the center of the rivet head.

REPAIR NO. 2
REPLACEMENT OF DAMAGED PYLON SEAL ASSEMBLY

1. General

This repair gives procedures for replacement of all or part of a damaged

pylon seal assembly (pylon seal). Blind rivets are used for replacement of
the pylon seals or pylon seal segments. Since blind rivets are used,
separation of the inner and outer exhaust nozzles is not necessary.

The repair instructions are divided into two parts. Part A gives
instructions for the replacement of a full pylon seal. Part B gives
instructions for the replacement of damaged pylon seal segments anywhere
on the pylon seal.

A. Repair Instructions.

(1) Place the nozzle assembly on fixture RSE1130 (See Figure 601).

(2) Replace the entire pylon seal assembly (Refer to Repair General,
Paragraph 2, Rivet Removal and Installation).

B. Remove the pylon seal (See IPL Figure 1, Details A and B).

(1) Mark a line on the outer nozzle skin immediately along the rear
edge of the pylon seal securing strip. Use a fine felt tip pen.
This line will help align the new parts when they are assembled.

(2) Remove all of the rivets (60) with a No. 31, 0.1200 in. (3,00 mm)
H.S. 7 percent cobalt drill bit.

(3) Remove the securing strip (90), the outer pylon seal (70), and the
inner pylon seal (80). Do not discard the securing strip, you can
use it again with the new pylon seals.

(4) Install the inner pylon seal (80), outer pylon seal (70), and
securing strip (90) with the aft edges aligned to make a continuous
surface. Align the parts with the mark applied in step (1). Hold
the components in position with C-clamps. (See Figure 601).

(5) Drill one pilot hole in each end of the seals with a No. 31, 0.1200
in. (3,05 mm) H.S. 7 percent cobalt drill bit. Use the holes in the
securing strip as an aid for alignment. Remove the burrs from the
edges of the holes.

REPAIR NO. 5
REPLACEMENT OF CENTERBODY POCKET SEAL ASSEMBLY

1. General

Pocket seal assemblies (See IPL Figure 2) are manufactured with the engine
attachment hole drilled to an undersize diameter of 0.39 in. (9,91 mm).
After the pocket seal is installed, a hole is drilled through the 0.40 in.
(10,16 mm) hole in the engine attach ring with a 0.41 in. (10,41 mm)
drill. Thus, the hole is precisely aligned through the engine attach ring
and pocket seal. A similar procedure is followed when a new pocket seal is
installed.

Six pocket seals, three on either side of top dead center, have drain
holes. These are drilled after final assembly of the centerbody to a
diameter of 0.25 in. (6,40 mm). Refer to Figure 603 for the location and
drilling angles of drain holes.

A pocket seal locating dowel must be locally manufactured (See paragraph 3

and Table 601). The locating dowel is used for alignment of the engine
attach ring hole and the pocket seal hole when new pocket seals are
installed.

2. Repair Instructions.

A. Put the centerbody of fixture RSE1129. (See Figure 601).

B. Remove the six rivets holding the pocket seal to the centerbody skin.
Use a No. 31, 0.12 in. (3,00 mm) H.S. 7 percent cobalt drill bit.

C. Remove the two rivets holding the pocket seal to the engine attach
ring. Use a No. 31, 0.12 in. (3,00 mm) H.S. 7 percent cobalt drill bit.
Remove the pocket seal.

D. Put the replacement pocket seal in position. Align the hole in the
engine attach ring with the engine attach hole in the pocket seal. Use
a locally manufactured alignment dowel to align the holes (See
paragraph 3 and Table 601).

E. Clamp the pocket seal in position with three C-clamps (See Figure 602).

F. Drill eight rivet holes in the pocket seal. Use a No. 30, 0.1285 in.
(3,30 mm) H.S. 7 percent cobalt drill bit. Use the original rivet holes
in the engine attach ring and centerbody skin as a guide. Remove the
C-clamps. Remove the burrs from the edges of the holes.

REPAIR NO. 10
NOZZLE EXTERNAL PATCH

1. General

This repair is for worn areas on the exhaust nozzle outer skin assembly
that are more than 0.006 inch (0.152 mm) and less than 0.016 inch (0.410
mm). This repair does not apply to the inner skin of the chevron assembly.
The worn areas are a result of the pylon fairing chafing on the exhaust
nozzle outer skin. Repair the damage with a titanium patch to make
stronger the worn areas and prevent more damage. Remove the nozzle from
the engine for this repair. Incorporate all nozzle service bulletins for
this interference before you do this repair (Refer to SB RA32078-77). If
the wear damage is more than permitted, contact Goodrich.

2. Repair Instructions

A. Clean the damaged area.

(1) Find the area for repair. Refer to Figure 601.

(2) Make the worn areas smooth and remove sharp edges with silicon
carbide abrasive paper.

WARNING: BEFORE YOU USE CHEMICALS, READ, UNDERSTAND, AND OBEY ALL
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CHEMICALS. THESE INSTRUCTIONS
INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE MANUFACTURER, THE MATERIAL
SAFETY DATA SHEET (MSDS), AND GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS.
CHEMICALS MAY CAUSE INJURY TO YOU OR MAKE YOU SICK WHEN
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT OBEYED. AN MSDS GIVES
INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW YOU MUST SAFELY USE, KEEP, AND DISCARD
CHEMICALS. GET INSTRUCTIONS FROM YOUR EMPLOYER ON HOW YOU
MUST SAFELY USE, KEEP, AND DISCARD CHEMICALS.

(3) Clean the outer skin with a clean lint-free cloth and the solvent.
Remove the solvent with a clean lint-free cloth before the solvent
becomes dry.

B. Make the patch.

NOTE: If more than one patch is necessary, find the butt splice of the
patches in an area without wear or damage (See Figure 601). Do
not radius corners at the butt splice locations.

(1) Make a patch for the damaged outer skin with the titanium sheet,
6AL-4V alloy, 0.050 inch (1.27 mm) thick. Patches are 2.36 inches
(60 mm) wide and approximately 1.0 inch (25.4 mm) longer then the
wear damage at the ends. The corner radius to be 0.25 inch minimum.

(2) Make the patch to the contour of the exhaust nozzle outer skin.

(3) Make sure the edges of the patch are tapered two times the
thickness from 0.020 inch (0.5 mm) above skin. See section A-A on
Figure 602.

C. Prepare the patch for installation on the exhaust nozzle outer skin.

(1) Put the patch on the center of the damaged areas.

(2) Drill No. 40 pilot holes in the patch and skin (See Figure 602).
Use the hole pattern. If the attach rivets for the internal
stiffeners is within the patch rivet pattern, remove the rivets and
drill new holes for the internal stiffener attach rivets through
the patch.

NOTE: Use temporary fasteners to hold the patch tightly in

position.

CAUTION: USE A DRILL STOP TO MAKE SURE THE DRILL WILL NOT GO THROUGH
THE INNER SKIN OF THE EXHAUST NOZZLE ASSEMBLY. THE HONEYCOMB
CORE BETWEEN THE OUTER AND INNER SKINS NARROWS AS YOU MOVE
AFT.

(3) Ream the rivet holes to the correct diameter through the skin and
patch. Drill vertical to the outer skin.

(4) Countersink the rivet holes in the patch for flush rivets used.

(5) Put marks on the exhaust nozzle to show the patch location.

(6) Remove the patch and clean the burrs from the patch and the skin.

WARNING: BEFORE YOU USE CHEMICALS, READ, UNDERSTAND, AND OBEY ALL
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CHEMICALS. THESE INSTRUCTIONS

REPAIR NO. 12
6 O’CLOCK EXTERNAL PATCH

1. General

This repair is for worn areas on the exhaust nozzle outer skin assembly
that are deeper than 0.005 inch (0,127 mm) and not more than 2.50 inches
(63,50 mm) long at the 6 o’clock position forward of the drain hole. The
width of damage is limited in size to a 2D rivet edge distance to new and
existing rivets. The worn area is a result of the drain line chafing and
rubbing on the titanium outer skin. Repair the damage with a titanium
patch to reinforce the worn areas. Eliminate the cause of interference or
wear with the CNA before accomplishing this repair.

2. Repair Instructions

A. Clean up the damaged area.

(1) Use 80-320 grit silicon carbide abrasive paper to smooth out the
worn areas, remove sharp edges, and upraised material. Use caution
not to deepen damage.

(2) Clean the outer skin with a clean lint-free cloth and the solvent.
Remove the solvent with a clean lint-free cloth before the solvent
becomes dry.

B. Make the external patch.

(1) Make a patch for the damaged outer skin with titanium sheet, 6AL-4V
alloy-annealed, 0.050 inch (1,27 mm) thick minimum per AMS4911.
Patches are wide and long enough to provide a 2D edge distance,
refer to Figures 601 and 602. Corner radius to be 0.25 inch (6,35
mm) minimum.

(2) Make sure the edges of the patch are chamfered 45 degrees, starting
from 0.020 inch (0,5 mm) above faying surface.

(3) Form the patch to the contour of the exhaust nozzle outer skin.

C. Prepare patch for installation at 6 o’clock position.

(1) Put the patch over the center of the damaged worn areas.

(2) Lay out the rivet hole pattern and drill pilot holes in the patch
and skin as shown in Figure 602. Maintain the required edge
distance for the rivets. Existing solid rivets in the outer skin
can be drilled out and picked up by the patch, if the holes fall in
the patch rivet pattern.

NOTE: Use clecos or temporary fasteners to hold the patch firmly

in place.

(3) Remove the rivet tails from the CNA body cavity.

CAUTION: USE A DRILL STOP TO MAKE SURE THE DRILL WILL NOT GO THROUGH
THE INNER SKIN OF THE EXHAUST NOZZLE ASSEMBLY.

(4) Properly locate the patch over the damaged area. Ream the rivet
holes to the proper diameter through the patch and CNA outer skin.
Drill vertical to the outer skin.

(5) Countersink the rivet holes in the patch to accept the flush rivets
used.

(6) Make a mark on the exhaust nozzle to show where the patch is
located.

(7) Remove the patch and clean burrs from the patch and skin.

(8) Clean the outer skin with a clean lint-free cloth and the solvent.
Remove the solvent with a clean lint-free cloth before the solvent
becomes dry.

D. Install patch on exhaust nozzle outer skin.

(10) Optional parts are listed as alpha variants.

(11) Attaching parts are captioned ATTACHING PARTS and are listed
immediately following the part(s) attached. The *** symbol follows
the last item of the attaching group.

(12) Fastener grip length

(a) You can use two sizes longer or shorter bolts, rivets or
