As students, we are required to volunteer in a service project once per clinical internship

semester. This spring semester I chose to complete my professional service. I joined and
participated in the AAMD student committee as a member.
As a new student in medical dosimetry, it can be daunting to find your way within the
career. There are so many different aspects of the role that having the support of other students
around you is very beneficial. I was drawn to the student committee through AAMD because I
had a lot of questions about my future and was not sure where to go with them. The committee is
democratic, and discussion based which allows new students or members to bring up concerns
and ideas they have. This subcommittee is brand new for the AAMD and I got to be a part of the
beginning. I ended up writing the committee’s biography on the association’s webpage. My
synthesized paragraph was then edited by full AAMD members and published to the site. The
elevator pitch style introduction is shown below.

I ended up being selected to be a liaison member for the Formal Education Committee as
well. With that responsibility, my job was to join and listen to the FEC meetings and present any
pertinent information back to the student subcommittee. Since I joined the students’ group there
has been one quarterly meeting for the FEC. I took notes about upcoming events, followed up
with information about the FECs updates and listened for any changes.
Overall, I have enjoyed meeting new people and feeling connected to the professional
network that is the AAMD. Through my experiences I have learned more about the career and
how supportive the association is in helping new dosimetrists. I look forward to being able to
help prepare new students in the future.
