Frog Crochet Square

Ribbit, Ribbit! This Frog Crochet Square is jumping in as the next piece to our Animal Square
Crochet-Along! The bright green is the perfect pop of color to our project and our friendly frog
is a nice representation of the spring season. As always, this square is made up of easy
stitches and embellishments so you will have this crocheted in no time at all!

Materials:

– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in colors Spring Green, Paddy Green (border), Cherry Red
(or pink for the cheeks), White, and a bit of black yarn for the mouth.

– Size H Crochet Hook


– Two 12mm black safety eyes (optional)


– Tapestry Needle

Frog Square Pattern:

First let’s make the Square:


With spring green yarn


Chain 21, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn

Row 2-23: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn


now continue making a SC in the 3 sides (2 Chains in each corner)

join in darker green yarn, fasten off spring green, SC in each stitch all the way around 4 sides
making 2 SC in each corner.

Fasten off weave in ends.

Note: It’s a good idea to measure your square so you know it is in fact square after row 23.
Add more or less rows to accommodate if needed. We all crochet with a different tension so
size can vary.

Frog Legs (make 2):


with spring green yarn


Chain 11, SC in second chain from hook and in the next 3, HDC in the next 2, DC in the next
3, 4 DC in last, now working on other side of chain, DC in next 4, HDC in next 2, SC in
remaining, fasten off.

Join in yarn towards bottom right or left of leg. You want the toes on one side of the leg and
then the opposite side for the other.

Chain 2 + DC + chain 2 and join to same stitch, slip stitch over so you working in the next
stitch chain 2 + DC + chain 2 and slip stitch to join to same stitch, repeat this one more time

making a 3rd toe. Fasten off leaving long tail. Weave in all other ends. You only need one
long strand of yarn to stitch frog legs onto square.

Frog Eyes (make 2)


starting with white yarn

Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join to first SC, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, join in spring green yarn and chain 1 (20 SC)

Round 3: SC in each stitch around, fasten off leaving long tail. Weave in all other loose ends.

Cheeks (make 2):


with red or pink yarn

Magic ring, chain 1 make 10 SC in ring, join, fasten off leaving long tail

Stitch on a smile with black yarn and your tapestry needle then stitch on the cheeks over the
ends of the smile.

Place black safety eyes through the crocheted eyes before stitching the eyes down to the
square. You can also crochet little black circles for the eyeballs as an alternative to the safety
eyes.
