PERMUTATION

MOTIVATION ACTIVITY!!
Instructions: Group the class into four and the teacher will give 4 cards with letter L.O, V, E
written on each card. Students will put the cards face down on the table and shuffle the cards
three times. Let the student choose 3 cards and face that card up. Students will record all the
possible arrangements of those 3 letters. If done, using all the cards, students will record all the
possible arrangements of the four cards.

PRESENTATION OF THE LESSON
Here is a term in mathematics that refers to the possible arrangements of things. And that is
_________?

PERMUTATION is used to indicate ordered arrangements of objects.

For instance, given a set of distinct objects, we can arrange them in several ways.
Like what we did with the possible arrangements of the 3 letters and 4 letters. The
listed arrangements are what we called________.
A permutation is an arrangement or ordering. For a permutation, the order matters.
Now, what are the permutations of the digits 0, 1, and 8?

LESSON PROPER
Now, how are we going to find the number of permutations of distinct n objects
taken r at a time?
 Bact To The Page 162: Read Ad Explain

Remember class that the object that we are talking about is the subject that is being
permuted. It may be an animal, a person, a letter, a number, or any other thing.

CIRCULAR PERMUTATIONS
In circular permutation, we are dealing with circular arrangements. Say, for example, we want to
find out in how many ways can we arrange 8 trees around a circular garden, which is given by
(n-1)!
Example page 171

10. How many words can be made from rearrangements of the word BANANA?

Example:
How many different ways can 3 students line up to purchase a new textbook
reader?

Solution:
N -factorial gives the number of permutations of n items.
n! = n(n - 1)(n - 2)(n - 3) … (3)(2)(1)

Permutations of n items taken r at a time.

P(n,r) represents the number of permutations of n items r at a time.
P(n,r) = n!/(n - r)!

Examples:
1.Find P(7,3) and P(15,5)

2.If a class has 28 students, how many different arrangements can 5 students give a
presentation to the class?

3. How many ways can the letters of the word PHOENIX be arranged?
