1. PURPOSE

To ensure the excavation and backfill quality of earth work for BGCS #3 and
BGCS #5 in accordance with requirements of contract and standards.

2. SCOPE

This method statement covers site preparation including excavation, backfilling,

sloping/shoring & compaction related to civil structures and General earth works as
well as Road Crossing, Security Fence Crossing within Plant Project premises.

3. REFERENCE

Following documents are considered as reference documents:

2.1 SATIP-A-114-01 Site preparation, execution & Backfilling during Construction

2.2 SAES – Q- 001 Criteria for design and Construction of Concrete Structures

2.3 SAES-A-114 Excavation and Backfilling

4. GENERAL

The total area of BGCS # 3 is about 743,665 m2, High point of finished ground
level is EL. + 520.000, among which the quantity of excavation shall be approximately
224,000 m3 and the quantity of filling shall be about 803,840 m3.

The total area of BGCS # 5 is about 470,000 m2, High point of finished ground
level is EL. + 673.700, among which the quantity of excavation shall be approximately
182,230 m3 and the quantity of filling shall be about 273,590 m3.

The amount of excavation is larger than amount of filling in both stations, the
backfilling earthsoil shall be purchased outside the site for backfilling at both sites.

According to ARAMCO standards and Specification, backfill soil is divided into

two types, one type is “fill material”, another type is “select fill material”,

Filling work from existing level up to finished grade level shall be of ''fill material'' as per
SAUDI ARAMCO Standard SAES-A-114, then loose soil shall be removed completely up to
hard/dense strata & re -fill with ''select fill material'' up to bottom of foundation.

The “fill material” of BGCS # 3 comes mainly from the nearby sand dunes and
applicable backfilling soil from foundation excavation, the quantity should meet the
construction requirements.

The “fill material” of BGCS # 5 comes mainly from the nearby borrow area and
applicable backfilling soil from foundation excavation, the quantity should meet the
construction requirements.

PQP -Project Quality Plan

QIP -Quality Inspection Plan

I/C In-Charge

QA & QC- Quality Assurance and Quality Control

PPE -Personal Protective Equipment

HSE- Health, Safety & Environment

IMTE- Inspection, Measuring & Test Equipment

6. RESPONSIBILITIES

Area In charge will ensure that the excavation and backfilling activities are
conducted according to this method statement, latest project drawings &
specifications.

QA&QC inspector will assure that all the relevant work is carried out in
conformance with project specification, PQP and QIP. In case of any non-
conformance, it will be controlled through corrective action request (CAR).

QA&QC inspector & surveyor will ensure that location & levels of the excavations
are as per approved drawings.

7. CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE AND METHOD

7.1. Configuration Sequence

The workload of the project is in large amount with tight construction period, thus
a large number of earthwork equipments shall be put into construction.

In order to conduct the construction plan reasonably, compactly and orderly, the
whole construction area shall be divided into eight construction areas based on the

layout plan of site structures, the excavation and backfilling of earthwork shall be
carried out in subregional and batches.

In accordance with the sequence of the issued drawings and facilitate the
construction, the earthwork for access road and Compressor area(incliuding Receiver
/ Launcher Area for BGCS #3) shall be completed at first as schedule, then followed
by Filter Area, Utility Systerm Area and Building Area, Evaporation pond, Flare Area,
the Expansion Area shall be carried out in the final construction. ( Refer to
attachemnt E&F)

7.2. Methods of Excavation

7.2.1Sequence

survey→clearing and stripping→excavation by machines → excavation by

manpower→foundation trench cleaning.

7.2.2 General Excavation

General excavation shall be performed after clearing and stripping has been
completed in accordance with PIP CVS02100, Section 4.3.1.

The surveyor will set coordinates as per relevant construction drawings and will
inform area / excavation foreman of these coordinates & levels.

The identification & protection of underground services will be done as per

project specifications.

If any underground services are detected the same will be exposed by hand
digging and also use Cable detector for tracing electrical cable and underground
Piping if any. Adequate protection & warning for the existing services will be ensured.

Dumping of unsuitable material will be done to disposal point and material fit for
backfilling will be piled separately at a suitable location.

While excavation is in progress, area foreman will continuously monitor the level
to avoid over excavation.

The QA&QC inspector and surveyor will check the lines & levels upon completion
of excavation.

Upon acceptance of survey, the area will be released for subsequent activities.

7.3. Fill and Backfill

7.3.1 General

Fill and backfill materials shall be from either on-site excavation, designated
borrow areas, or off-site sources conforming to the following criteria or as
recommended by a geotechnical report. All borrow material and its source of supply

shall be approved by Saudi Aramco. Stockpiles of cohesive soil shall be protected
from freezing.

7.3.2 Fill and Backfill Materials

Fill or backfill materials shall meet the requirements given in 'Fill Material' or
'Select Fill Material'below. Other fill materials may be used with the approval of the
Supervisor, Civil Engineering Unit, Consulting Services Department.

'Fill Material' shall be used for all fills except where 'Select Fill Material' is
specified. As a minimum, 'Select Fill Material' shall be used within 0.6 m (2 ft) of the
bottom elevation of foundations, spread footings, or slabs-on-grade when fill is
required to achieve final grade. 'Select Fill Material' shall also be specified for backfill
which will be in contact with concrete or steel structures.

Foundations may be constructed directly on undisturbed soil. Excavation of

undisturbed soil and replacement with Select Fill Material should not be performed
except as recommended in a geotechnical report.

Soils shall be classified per ASTM D2487.

(1) Fill Material

Fill material shall consist of gravel, sand and/or marl. The maximum size of the fill
material shall be one-half the lift thickness or 75 mm (3 inches), whichever is less. Fill
material shall be free of frozen lumps, organic matter, trash, chunks of highly plastic
clay or other unsatisfactory material.

(2)Select Fill Material

Select fill shall be composed only of inorganic material and shall have 100%
passing the 5 cm (2 in) sieve and from 0 to 20% passing the No. 200 sieve. That
portion of the material passing the No. 40 sieve shall have a maximum liquid limit of
35 and a maximum plasticity index of 12 per ASTM D4318. Liquid limit and plastic
limit tests are not required for select fill material with less than 15% passing the No.
200 sieve.

Clean sand and dune sand can be used as Select Fill Material, if sand is used as
fill material.

(3)Compaction Water

Water used for compaction of fill material shall be reasonably free of salts, oil,
acid, alkalis, organic matter, or other deleterious substances. Use of water with a TDS
in excess of 10,000 ppm such as brackish water, seawater or water obtained from
ground pits such as subkha water is not allowed unless it is proven and verified by the
Company Representative and the Project Inspection Representative that there is no
other source of water available within 20 km and all concrete to be supported by or
buried within the fill is designed for either Exposure Type II or III as defined in SAES-
Q-001 Table 1.

Exception:

The compaction water TDS requirements do not apply to fill or backfill which will
be below the surrounding area natural water table.

7.3.3 Performance Requirements

The area in charge will ensure that particular area has been cleared for
backfilling by QA&QC.

The backfill material will be sourced from suitable stock.

The backfill material will be placed in layers according to the specification.

The layers will be moisturized and compacted to 97% compaction.

Generally compaction will be done by compactors.

Each backfill layers will be tested by test laboratory.

An acceptable test result will allow the next layer of backfill to be placed and
compacted.

This process will continue until the area is completely backfilled.
