A. Background Information for Learners

The Circulatory System is composed of three powerful organs which are the

heart, blood, and blood vessels. It is a system that is responsible in the

distribution of oxygen, water and food nutrient needed by the body.

The circulatory system is an important system. It comprises the heart, blood,

and blood vessels. Each organs function relatedly to help each other in working

responsibly. The organs work like a teamwork. It means that without the other,

part the body would not be able to survive. The blood depends on the heart so it

could circulate and could reach to the different parts of the body. The blood

vessels likewise become the road or the passageway of the blood. And without

the heart the blood would not be purified, eventually the body parts will not get

the needed oxygen and nutrients.

Heart. It is a pear – shaped like organ that pumps blood to the different

parts of the body. Its alternating and contracting movement causes the blood to

circulate in the body. This also makes the beating of 70 – 80 per minute.

 It is made up of cardiac muscle cells. It is in the middle of the chest with its

apex (lowermost part) tilted to the left side.

 It is enclosed by the pericardium (thin

but very strong sac).

 It has four chambers:

 left and right atria/ auricles –

upper chamber

 left and right ventricles – lower

Blood. The red fluid that flows all

through the body and as such it

called” the river of life.”

Types of Bloods

 red blood cells, which carry oxygen

throughout the body

 white blood cells, which fight

infections http://reclaimyourlongevity.com/articles/wp-
content/uploads/2016/05/heartXbloodXcirculation.jpg

 platelets, which are cells that help

you stop bleeding if you get a cut

 plasma, a yellowish liquid that carries nutrients, hormones, and proteins

throughout the body

Blood vessels. Blood vessels are tube like highways and roads that serve as the

passageways of the blood. Blood is carried in a closed system of vessels that

begins and ends at the heart. The three major types of vessels are arteries,

capillaries, and veins .

Arteries. Arteries carry blood away from the heart. Aorta is the biggest artery;

these branches out into smaller arteries called arterioles. From the arterioles, the

blood is pushed through the capillaries. Capillaries contact tissue cells and directly

serve cellular needs. The food nutrients and oxygen molecules are transferred from

the blood to the cells of the body and carbon dioxide and other waste are picked up.

Capillaries have very thin walls which allow the food nutrients and oxygen molecules

to easily pass through.

Veins carry blood toward the heart. The walls are thin and slightly elastic.

There are two large Veins connected to the heart: 1.) Superior Vena Cava; 1.)

Inferior Vena Cava. Like, most veins have internal one- way valves spaced at a

regular interval that prevent the blood from flowing backward.

Activity 1: Fill in with the correct word to complete the dialogue.

Heart: Hello, everyone! I am your dearest heart, I pump b_______ into the different

parts of your b______. How are you blood vessel?

Blood vessel: I am fine my dear heart. I work every now and then because I am the

p_______ way of the blood.

Blood: Yes, b________ vessel I am always thankful of you for making a way for me

every minute and every second all through out.

Blood vessel: You’re welcome blood.

Blood: Yes, I am! And we are the organs of the c__________ system.

Activity 2: Identify what organ is being describe.

________1 . The tubes through which the blood flows.

________2 . The red fluid that flows inside the blood vessels.

________3. The organ that pumps blood to the different parts of the body

Activity 3: Fill in with the correct word to form the concept of the selection

Circulatory ___________

The __________system is made up of the _________ the blood and

the__________ vessels. The _________ is a pear – shaped muscular organ that

pumps __________ to the different parts of the body. The __________ is a red fluid

that flows through the blood ___________to reach to the different part.

E. Guide Questions

 What are the major organs of a circulatory system?

 How does each organ work? The heart? The blood? The blood vessels?

 How do organs of the circulatory system work together? Explain.

F. Reflection

As a Grade Six student how can you take good care of your circulatory system?
