STATE OF SIKKIM: INDIA’S COVID–19

EXCEPTION
By- Editor of Young Minds
4th September,2020
Almost six months ago, India’s northeastern state of Sikkim was put
on high alert along with six
other states in the country to
prevent the spread of the novel
coronavirus. Unlike the other
states of India, Sikkim was
considered more vulnerable
owing to its contiguity to
Bhutan, Nepal, and China,
where COVID-19 cases had
already been detected. In the
first week of April, a person
also died from the infection at
Kalimpong in West Bengal
which was only 70 kilometers from Sikkim.Clearly, danger was
knocking on Sikkim’s door and the state government started its fight
2

against the disease weeks before the central government began issuing
advisories in this regard.
SD Dhakal, secretary to Sikkim chief minister Prem Singh Tamang,
was quoted by the media as saying that an action plan was being
implemented weeks ahead of the state being put on high alert in
March. He disclosed the slew of measures adopted to check the spread
of the virus in the border state.
The first step that was announced was the closure of tourist

as entry and exit points with West Bengal, with sufficient safeguards.
From January 29, health professionals were stationed at the border to
screen people who entered the state. All the 80 samples sent to
outstation laboratories for testing have come out negative for COVID-
19 so far. Sikkim is likely to have its first testing laboratory soon.

“REOPENING OF SCHOOL AFTER LOCKDOWN”

says Shiv Vani Model Sr. Sec. School Principal
The latest threat to global health is the ongoing outbreak of the newly
discovered novel coronavirus or COVID-19. The pandemic has
affected students in so many ways like children dropping out of school,
can’t connect in online classes because of network or no network etc.
And reopening of school in this pandemic is a challenge for school
staff. But our school is planning to reopen school after lockdown
restrictions are eased by
government.
It’s been five months that
the teachers are
conducting online classes
for students. But as we all
know everything in world
has advantages and
disadvantages . Online
classes has been very
helpful in pandemic to
connect teachers and
students but there are also
the times when students
can’t join classes or
teachers is not able to
connect with students
because of network and
technical issues. They
cannot conduct practicals
or subjective exams in
online classes. So to

our school will try to reopen school with certain standard operating
procedures issued by government. The government of India has
recommended only getting senior students or only 33% of students can
attend school, maintaining social distancing, always wearing face
masks and having sanitizer, not
overcrowding washrooms or
any part of the school and
reducing school hours or
having school only three times
a week. The school is trying
every different method to
prevent COVID-19 like having
plastic shield around benches
to avoid any contact, using
only digital learning and
minimising the use of papers,
having sanitizer at every corner
and the classroom of the
school. The school will also
provide masks for shoes and
gloves for hands, we are also
increasing nursing staff and
having thermometer and
oximeter to check student's
temperature and oxygen.
Those students who has any
chronic respiratory illness will
only be called when it is WHO recommends using hand sanitizer in

session every week in every classroom through smartclass. In this
session students will learn different things about COVID-19 by
healthcare workers. They will also tell how to clam and relax our

mental health in this situation.

As we all no there is still no specific treatments or vaccines for
COVID-19.However,we can still go back to our daily lives with new
normal of wearing masks, sanitizing our hands and adopting social
distancing. We the school staff is working hard to get their students
back to school with every preventive measures. We as an active citizen
should also contribute to combat COVID-19 and accept this new
normal by doing these simple things.

MIGRANTS HAVE UNDERGONE

'TREMENDOUS SUFFERING' SAYS NARENDRA
MODI IN HIS RECENTN SPEECH
Prime minister Narendra Modi’s in his recent speech encourages
migrant workers. As we all are aware that migrant workers and
labourers have suffered tremendously
during the coronavirus pandemic and
the countrywide lockdown enforced to
contain it. But our PM Narendra Modi
encouraged migrant workers and
labourers to keep the faith by saying “I
am aware that the migrant workers
and labourers have undergone
'Tremendous Suffering' because of this
COVID-19 pandemic. Workers have
lost their work with not enough money to survive or no money. You
had to leave the place of your work which was your home too and
were forced to go back to your hometown. It has been many months
since you all are facing hardships and immense difficulties. But let me
tell you one thing life and time are like hill and valleys. All features
like hill and valleys makes the life. In life we come across
achievements which denotes progress and success, and deep valleys

represent difficult times. But bad time too don’t last forever. There is a
saying 'when you see maximum darkness in the night, this night of
gloom and difficulties too shall pass and we will be embraced by the
new sunshine, full of hope, happiness, opportunities, good health as
well as wealth. The government of India is not leaving any stone
unturned in order to make sure that
things get back to normal. The
government is also figuring out new
schemes so that there are plenty of
employment opportunities as well.
The ministers and concerned offices
are working towards the welfare and
betterment of our labourers and
migrant workers.
But not only government can make
changes, we the people of India
have to move forward based on our
own abilities, in our own way, and
there is only one way to do it by
becoming ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat'
or 'Self-reliant India' jai hind, jaye Bharat”.
Prime minister announced a nationwide lockdown in March,
hundreds of migrant workers lost their jobs and home. But by this
speech of our Prime Minister the migrant workers have founded a ray
of light by becoming self-reliant or Atma-Nirbhar. As Self-reliance is
the key to overcome any crisis, even this COVID-19 pandemic.
