What are adjectives? Can you give me an example?

B. Presentation
Read and study the following sentences.

1. This apple is big.

2. The coffee is hot

3. Ana is short.

4. The tree is tall.

C. Teaching/Modeling
The words big, long, Hot, short, and tall used in the sentences 1-5 are in the positive degree because they
talk about only one thing and it is not being compared with another.
 Positive degree signifies quality. It talks about only one thing, and it is not being compared with another.

Example:

 The plant is big.


 Gumamela is beautiful.
 Elephant is big.
 Ant is small.
The car is expensive.

D. Guided Practice
Direction: Read the sentences. Underline the adjectives that are used in each sentence.

In picture a, yellow describes the color of the sun, picture b, round describes the shape of the ball,
picture c, seven describes the number of days in a week, and picture d, square describes the shape of table.
These are adjectives.
 Adjectives are describing words. It describes person, place, thing, animal, and event (noun).
Example:
* yellow - describes the color * round - describes the shape
* seven - describes the number * square -describes the shape
Another example of adjectives:
big, tall, clean, small, seven, blue, honest, bitter, square, fast, many, noisy, happy

The car is big. The van is bigger than the car

Take note of the following:


Lito is taller than Carlo.
 We compare the two boys.
 The van is bigger than the car
 We compare the two vehicles.
Comparative degree - describes two nouns or pronouns. Bigger is a sample word in a comparative degree of
adjective. We add -er to the adjective.

Example:

 The plant is shorter than the tree.


 Gumamela flower is more beautiful than santan.
 Elephant is bigger than carabao.
 Ant is smaller than bees.
 The van is more expensive than the car.

Direction: Read the sentences. Choose the appropriate adjective in each sentence.

The underlined words biggest, longest, and most beautiful are in superlative degrees of an adjectives.
 Superlative degrees – signifies quality in the greatest or least degree. Three or more items are being
compared.
Example:

The elephant is the biggest among the three animals.


Viola

Viola is the tallest girl in the class.

Another example:
 Mico is the shortest boy in the group.
 She is the most beautiful in the class.
 She is the prettiest girl in our class.
 Rolex is the most expensive watch in the jewelry store.
