USING MANGOSTEEN RIND AS A PIGMENT IN A MULTIPURPOSE MAKEUP

When you go to the local market in late summer, you will find a round, dark purple fruit everywhere, with a lot of

people swarming and buying the fruit, and that fruit is mangosteen. Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) or

known as purple Mangosteen is a tropical evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia whose fruits possess a

distinctive and pleasant taste that has granted them the epithet of “queen of the fruits”.

Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana Linn.) of the Guttiferae family, is a tropical fruiting tree. The fruit rind has a

deep reddish purple color when ripening, while the edible flesh is white and sweet, tangy and citrusy in taste

(Gritsanapan and Chulasiri 1983; Mangosteen tree can reach up to six to 25 m height with lushes of leathery

thick leaves canopying the tree (Osman & Milan, 2006). Meanwhile its fruit is round with thick skin (or also called

pericarp) and ripens seasonally, from green to yellow to pink spotted and finally full purple colored fruit (Abdul-

Rahman et al., 2017; Parijadi et al., 2018). The edible portion of the fruit resides within the pericarp, comprising

three to more than eight septa or also called aril, white in color and having sweet-sour taste (Osman & Milan,

2006). Its seeds also reside in one or two septa per fruit and are known to be recalcitrant, extremely sensitive to

cold temperature and drying (Mazlan et al., 2018a, 2018b)

Several investigations have been carried out to establish how mangosteen can help our bodies and whether it

has extra qualities spanning from the peel to the mangosteen meat. Mangosteen has a unique sweet-sour taste

and is rich in beneficial compounds such as xanthones. Mangosteen had originally been used in various folk

medicines to treat diarrhea, wounds, and fever. More recently, it has been used as a major component in health

supplement products for weight loss and promoting general health. This is perhaps due to its known medicinal

benefits, including as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Interestingly, publications related to mangosteen

have surged in recent years, suggesting its popularity and usefulness in research laboratories. However, there

are still no updated reviews (up to 2018) in this booming research area, particularly on its metabolite

composition and medicinal benefits (Aizat et al., 2019).

If mangosteen can do such things as make us stay healthy, how about making us pretty too? Mangosteen rind

has a wonderful color that can also look good on the skin. Mangosteen rind has many properties that are really

good for the skin, such as antioxidant agents. The mangosteen rind also has natural pigments. If we use the

mangosteen rind's natural pigment in color formulations in makeup. According to Cambridge Dictionary(2023)
Makeup is a colored substance used on your face to improve or change its appearance and according to the

vocabulary (2023) that makeup you put on your face can be used to disguise your real self a little bit. This kind

of makeup is also called cosmetics, and it consists of things like lipstick, mascara, foundation, and so on. This

meaning of makeup has been in use since the 1880s, a period when Queen Victoria declared it vulgar, only

appropriate for stage actors.

This study focuses on extracting mangosteen rind dye and adding it as a color ingredient in a multi-use makeup

product .It aims to prove that mangosteen pigment can be a good color ingredient in makeup. The procedure will

be carried out by the researchers in a natural way to create the multipurpose cosmetics.

In further discussing and understanding the relevance of this subject. related research and literature may be of

great use

In 2019 the EBSCO Industries, Inc. conducted a study about Lip color formulation using mangosteen rind extract

Their study aimed is to extract dyes from the skin of the mangosteen fruit (Garcinia mangostana Linn) and utilize

them in the manufacture of cosmetics, especially lip color preparations. The research included material

collection and plant determination, dye extraction and phytochemical screening, physical stability test of

mangosteen peel extract, lipstick formulation with extracts of mangosteen peel various concentrations, physical

stability test of lipstick preparations made, safety tests, hedonic tests for preparations made, and statistical data

analysis. The separation of mangosteen rind pigment produced a thick extract of dyes of 15.52% w/w.

Phytochemical screening resulted that G. mangostana peel extract showing the absence of quinone and steroid

compounds. Mangosteen rind extract was quite stable at temperature of 10-50°C, but not in the temperature

range between 60°C and 80°C. Storage evaluation for 56 days, pH, and color (by thin-layer chromatography)

was stable, observation of fungal growth, the exit of rough gains, or liquid during storage time did not occur. Lip

color formula with various concentrations of mangosteen rind (10, 15, and 20%) was safe to be used. Based on

the hedonic test, lip color formula containing various concentrations of mangosteen rind color (10, 15, and 20%)

was quite preferred by consumers. And among the three, the most preferred formula was formula 3, which was

lip color with the addition of a dye concentration of 20% (Mustarichie, Resmi; Gozali, Dolih, 2019).

The widely reported adverse effects of synthetic ingredients encourage the development of green

cosmeceuticals to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3. The waste product of mangosteen
(mangosteen peel) was utilized in the formulation to reduce waste production corresponding to SDG 12, in

addition to its anti-aging and pigmentation control effects. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate novel

herbal face creams containing standardized mangosteen peel extract. The mangosteen creams were formulated

using natural ingredients and were evaluated for their organoleptic characteristics, rheology, spreadability and

pH.the development of mangosteen-based green cosmeceutical face cream is in line with SDG 3 and 12. It is

expected to be used as a safe and effective alternative to synthetic products (Tan et al., 2022).

Among the fruit peels, mangosteen peel is an important source of natural phenolic antioxidants. The

mangosteen peel contains various bioactive substances, i.e., phenolic acids and flavonoids, which possess

biological and medicinal properties, especially antioxidant properties (Suttirak & Manurakchinakorn,

2012).Processing of mangosteen generally involves separating the desired aril from the peel considered as

waste. Recently, the mangosteen fruit extract is popularly used as a food supplement, while the fruit peel extract

has been used in herbal medicines. The mangosteen peel has been reported to contain a variety of bioactive

compounds with potential applications as therapeutic agents or as functional food additives such as phenolic

acids (Zadernowski et al. 2009), tannins (Pothitirat et al. 2009), xanthones (Zarena and Udaya Sankar 2009b),

anthocyanins (Palapol et al. 2009) and other bioactive compounds.

This research study aims to provide an overview of the significant research questions regarding the uses of

mangosteen rind as a pigment in a multipurpose makeup. Furthermore, it seeks to answer the following

questions:

1. What color will the mangosteen rind produce?

2. Will the intensity of the pigment be enough to appear perfectly on the skin?

3. Will the pigment be suitable for makeup use?

The procedure will be carried out by the researchers in a natural way to create the multipurpose cosmetics. This

study finds its significance in the following:

Students. This study will enable them to understand the required benefits of mangoosteen for the skin in the

event that it is used as a cosmetic.

Future Researchers. This study presents the advantages of using mangoosteen as a cosmetic ingredient and

will act as a reference for future

This study will employ a descriptive experimental design with a qualitative approach. The overall goal research

is to determine whether the pigment in mangosteen is sufficient to produce a strong color on the skin. The

study’s participants will have different skin color and skin types. The purpose of the selected respondents. As a

result, this study will only seek their insights and opinions after the respondents use the product.

This will be conducted in General Santos City SPED Integrated School at Purok Malipayon, Barangay San Isidro

General Santos City. The selection of the respondents will be based on their skin color and type.

To help you better understand the research, the following definitions of key terms are provided:
