LEARNING OBJECTIVE By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
1. Understand a variety of texts by using a range of appropriate reading strategies to construct
meaning
2. Understand specific details and information in longer texts on an increased range of familiar
topics
PRE-LESSON Pupils reminded the word colorful, tasty, traditional, trendy and lightly-
colored on the board. Pupils elicited that all these words are adjectives
and that we use adjectives to describe, or talk about, someone or
something’s,
character.
LESSON DELIVERY 1. Pupils asked to read the instructions and make sure they
understand that they have to do two things in this task- put a tick
if a sentence is correct or rewrite the sentences correctly if it is
wrong. Pupils explained that any errors will be in the order of the
adjectives only.
2. Pupils encouraged to read sentence through without writing any
answers. They asked to underline the adjectives in each sentence
and to decide what kind of adjective each one is. They reminded
that they can look back at the information on order of adjectives
at the top of the page to help them with the task.
3. Pupils asked to read the instructions and the writing task in
italics and make sure they understand what they have to do.
Pupils encouraged to underline words and phrases in the writing
task that show that the information in the true sentences are
correct.
4. Pupils asked to read the title of the review and they asked which
words show that the review will be positive.
POST LESSON Pupils asked to identify with their talk partner at least one new word or
expression that they have learned in relation to the topic.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
1. Explain in simple language connections between characters, places, or events
in texts and their own lives
ACTIVITIES
LESSON DELIVERY 1. Choose a text that pupils have read. Start by asking them to work
in threes and retell the story. Monitor and correct.
2. Put pupils into groups of 6 - 8. Give each group a focus: a
character / a place / an event. Each group should have a different
focus. Tell them to create a mind map with us much information as
they can remember about their particular focus.
3. When they have finished tell each group to select a couple of
presenters and ask them to present their poster to the rest of the
class.
4. Once you have finished the activity ask the pupils to sit down
again. Tell them to think about the different places, people and
events in the story. Give them an example of how they connect to
you, e.g. I love the sea and in this story there is a beautiful
beach. The main character also loves the sea so we like the same
place.
5. Tell the pupils to think about how the story connects to them.
Ask them to work in pairs and tell each other the connections.

ACTIVITIES
LESSON DELIVERY 1. Choose 5 short texts with different content and label them A to
E. Try to select texts that are completely different in topic.
2. Write a few key words on the board:
-what -who -where -why
3. Give each pupil a text to read. Make sure a mix of different
texts is given out. Tell the pupils to read the text they have been
given.
4. Tell pupils to think about what they have read and complete a
summary by writing notes under each heading on the board.
5. Give them time to write and monitor and support as necessary.
6. Tell pupils to put aside their summary. Give out the five texts in a
mixture, making sure each pupil gets one text e.g. 8 pupils get text
A, 8 more get text B and so on. Once they have had time to read the
texts swap them around so they can read the second text. Keep
going until all the pupils have read all 5 texts.
7. Once the pupils have read all the texts tell them to work in
groups of 5. Mix the pupils up so that the pupils are sitting
with people who summarised a different text.
8. Tell each pupil to read their summary aloud. The other pupils
guess which text they are summarising.

LESSON DELIVERY 1. Choose a text that pupils have read. Start by asking them to work
in threes and retell the story. Monitor and correct.
2. Put pupils into groups of 6 - 8. Give each group a focus: a
character / a place / an event. Each group should have a different
focus. Tell them to create a mind map with us much information
as they can remember about their particular focus.
3. When they have finished tell each group to select a couple of
presenters and ask them to present their poster to the rest of the
class.
4. Once you have finished the activity ask the pupils to sit down
again. Tell them to think about the different places, people and
events in the story. Give them an example of how they connect to
you, e.g. I love the sea and in this story there is a beautiful
beach. The main character also loves the sea so we like the
same place.
5. Tell the pupils to think about how the story connects to them.
Ask them to work in pairs and tell each other the connections.

2. Write a few key words on the board:

3. Give each pupil a text to read. Make sure a mix of different texts
is given out. Tell the pupils to read the text they have been given.
4. Tell pupils to think about what they have read and complete a
summary by writing notes under each heading on the board.
5. Give them time to write and monitor and support as necessary.
6. Tell pupils to put aside their summary. Give out the five texts in a
mixture, making sure each pupil gets one text e.g. 8 pupils get text
A, 8 more get text B and so on. Once they have had time to read the
texts swap them around so they can read the second text. Keep
going until all the pupils have read all 5 texts.
7. Once the pupils have read all the texts tell them to work in
groups of 5. Mix the pupils up so that the pupils are sitting
with people who summarised a different text.
8. Tell each pupil to read their summary aloud. The other pupils
guess which text they are summarising.

PRE-LESSON PUPILS asked to recall with their talk partner the new vocabulary
they have learnt from the previous lesson. The ideas collected and
shared as a whole class.
LESSON DELIVERY 13. PUPILS asked to read the Exam Close-up box. PUPILS
explained that identifying the type of text can help to
understand the information in it.
14. PUPILS asked to read the text again and to underline
keywords related to the questions while reading.
15. PUPILS asked to do the Exam Task individually, but check
as a class.
16. PUPILS asked to read the statements and explain any words
they don’t understand. PUPILS asked to work in pairs to
discuss the statements.
POST LESSON PUPILS asked to review their learning in this lesson by getting
them to close their textbooks and then to recall with their talk
partner the exam tips they read on page 33 of SB. When PUPILS
