CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents the introduction of the case study and its problem. It includes the
background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, significance of the
study, and the scope and limitations that are used in the study.

1.1 Background of the Study

Directly or indirectly, water affects all aspects of life. Without them, the earth would look
very different than it does today, with no vegetation on land and no oxygen for animals to
breathe. Water is a precious resource that needs to be valued and protected because it is essential
to maintaining the health of both humans and the environment. The sociological study of water
consumption looks at the effects of water usage on individuals, institutions, and society as a
whole.
In Maasin and its neighboring barangay, Tiayon, the local government water service
association, MATIWASA, is in charge of managing water and sanitation services. The
MATIWASA is originally taken from its main source which is a brook from the highest portion
of Barangay Maasin, where this certain barangay is abundant of natural water source. So, this
water system association team provides water down to Barangay Tiayon by two participations of
the said barangays. Families in the barangays nearby rely on them for their water needs in which
individual metered connections are being required to every household to determine the water
usage.
Our study focuses on individual household water use in Purok Santan, Barangay Tiayon,
Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay by withdrawing the water source in Maasin-Tiayon Water System
Association (MATIWASA). Showers, toilets, washing machines, dishwashers, and faucets all
contribute to the majority of household water use. Personal and household water use in Purok
Santan, Barangay Tiayon, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay is extremely important because residential
areas first in-demand is water. Since there will be no other source of water from this particular
are, only MATIWASA is their main source as well as the collection of water from heavy rains.
We must look into and research how household and individual water use is used on a small scale
and on a daily basis in order to comprehend and suggest ways to improve water conservation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the view regarding the Water Consumption of Maasin-
Tiayon Water System Association (MATIWASA) particularly at Purok Santan, Barangay
Tiayon, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

 What are the factors that led consumers to subscribe to MATIWASA?

 How much water does each household consume on a daily basis?
 What are the things that consumers do in order to save water and reduce their water
consumption?
 Where do consumers use the water they consumed from MATIWASA?
 How many households currently subscribes to MATIWASA?

1.3 Objective of the Study

This study aims to determine and answer the following:

 To identify the factors that drive consumers to use water from MATIWASA.
 To determine how much water each household consumes on a daily basis.
 To determine how consumers conserve water in order to reduce higher water
consumption.
 To discover where consumers use the water they consume from MATIWASA.
 To identify how many households presently subscribes to MATIWASA.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The study of Water Consumption of Maasin-Tiayon Water System Association

(MATIWASA) Particularly at Purok Santan, Barangay Tiayon, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay will
give benefits to the following:

Consumers

This study will give consumers a general idea of how much water they use on a daily
basis and how they use the water they get from MATIWASA. This will allow them to discover
water saving tricks. This study will give them a new perspective on the importance of water
conservation and could lead to new opportunities for business.

Government

This study will help the government to determine how much water consumers use each
day and where they typically use it. This study will be used to determine which days of the week
does consumers consumed more water. It will also serve as a wake-up call to government
officials and staff, who will establish a new water source and water preservation system that is
centered on the needs of the community.

1.5 Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study will be conducted to determine the water consumption of consumers

subscribing to Maasin-Tiayon Water System Association (MATIWASA) particularly at Purok
Santan, Barangay Tiayon, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay Province. The respondents' feedback will be
used in the studies to assess the water consumption in the two barangays mentioned.

The respondents of this study are limited to the residents of Purok Santan, Barangay
Tiayon, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay Province. This study will utilize questionnaires to collect the
