IV. PROCEDURES
ELICIT
Teacher will recall the previous topic by asking Guided Questions
questions to the student:
1. What did you do last Wednesday?
(Learners conducted a group activity about viscosity)
 Identify the factors that affect magma’s viscosity.

 Explain how temperature affect magma’s viscosity.

 Identify the variables that affects the magma’s viscosity.
 Identify the independent and dependent variables.
 Give the relationship between the two variables.

 Explain how amount of dissolved gases affect magma’s viscosity

 Explain how chemical composition affect magma’s viscosity.

 Identify the variables that affects the magma’s viscosity.
 Identify the independent and dependent variables.
 Give the relationship between the two variables.

 Explain how magma’s viscosity affects the volcanic cone shape.

Students’ answers

Teacher will say:

Very good, we discuss about the factors that affect magma’s viscosity, and the variables that affects the
magma’s viscosity which is the independent and dependent variables and their relationship whether it is a
“Directly and inversely proportional.
ENGAGE
PICTURE TALK
To introduce the new topic; Teacher will ask
questions:

Teacher will say:

Guided Questions:
1. What can you say about the pictures? (Students answer may vary)
2. What will happen when a volcano erupted?
 Releases lava and other gases.

Teacher will say:

Okay very good; it is about the different types of volcanic eruption.

Okay class, before we proceed to the next activity, do you know that based on pictures that have you
observed actually that is a picture of volcanic eruption that can be found in the Philippines. First picture is
the Mayon Volcano was erupted last January 24, 2018, second picture is the Taal Volcano, erupted last
March 26, 2022 located at southern Luzon Philippines.

EXPLORE

Teacher will say: ACTIVITY 1: PATCH & MATCH (Group 1)

Directions: Analyze and Match the pictures in column A with the name and definition in Column B. Attach or

volcanic eruptions and Explain what happens
during volcanic eruption(U) we will have a group COLUMN A COLUMN B
activity entitled "PATCH & MATCH" for group 1 _1. A. Plinian is excessively explosive type of eruption of gas
and pyroclastic materials, like in Pinatubo Volcano in
and group 2 will do the activity called "FINDING Zambales.
B. Vulcanian is characterized by tall eruption columns
THE SEQUENCE" Allotted time 10 minutes. that reach up to 20 km high with pyroclastic flow and
ash fall tephra like that of Paricutin Volcano in Mexico.
C. Strombolian a periodic, weak to violent eruption
characterized by fountain lava, just like the Irazu
Question: _2. Volcano in Costa Rica.
1. Do you know this activity? D. Phreatomagmatic is a violent eruption due to the
contact between water and magma. As a result, a large
column of very fine ash and high-speed and sideway
emission of pyroclastic materials called base surges are
observed.
E. Phreatic or hydrothermal is a stream-driven eruption
For Group 1 activity “Patch & Match” as the hot rocks come in contact with water. It is short
lived, characterized by ash columns but may be a
_3. beginning of a larger eruption.

1. The first you need to read and

analyze the description and
afterwards match the description to
the pictures. _4.

For Group 2 activity “Finding the Sequence”

1. Analyze the process of volcanic
eruption. Arrange the process of
volcanic eruptions into correct order _5.
using numbers 1-5.

Question:
1. Are we clear? Do you understand the
activity?
Group the class into 2 groups, after
teacher will give an envelope with the
activity materials; manila paper, pilot
pen, pictures.

Guided Questions:

1. Based on the activity. What were you able to find out? And how they differ from each other?

ACTIVITY 2: FINDING THE SEQUENCE! (Group2)

Directions: Analyze the process of volcanic eruption. Arrange the process of volcanic eruptions into correct
order using numbers 1-5. Paste or attach your answer to the manila paper and answer the following guided
question provided below. (10pts).

A Magma moves upward and accumulates in an area

called magma chamber.
B Gas-charged magma reaches the surface and
explodes. The presence of dissolved gases enables the
molten materials to explode.
C More highly gas charged magma reaches the surface
and the volcano explodes.
D Volcanic activities include the melting of solid rocks in
the mantle which became thick molten materials called
magma.
E High temperature and pressure push magma through
the openings like vents and fractures. The magma then
oozed out to form a lava dome but not cause any
explosive eruption.

Guided Questions:

1. Why do volcanoes erupt?

2. How do volcanoes erupt? (Step)

Teacher will say:

Okay, are you done? Are you ready to present your work?

EXPLAIN

Lesson Proper ACTIVITY 1: MATCH ME! (Group 1)

(Students Group Presentation output) 1. E
2. D
Teacher will explain and correct the 3. C
misconception of the student’s idea about 4. B
the types of volcanic eruptions. 5. A

A. Teacher will ask to have two (2) Teacher will discuss briefly:
representatives per group to present
their output. Guided Questions:
B. Teacher will evaluate the group
activity presentation using the rubrics. 1. Based on the activity. What were you able to find out? And how they differ from each
other?
See attach RUBRICS  The different types of volcanic eruption. Some of the volcanic eruption is
effusive and explosive.
C. After the group presentation, the
teacher will check the presentation
output of each group.

ACTIVITY 2: FINDING THE SEQUENCE! (Group2)

ANSWER KEY:

2 Magma moves upward and accumulates in an area

called magma chamber.
4 Gas-charged magma reaches the surface and
explodes. The presence of dissolved gases enables the
molten materials to explode.
5 More highly gas charged magma reaches the surface
and the volcano explodes.
1 Volcanic activities include the melting of solid rocks in
the mantle which became thick molten materials called
magma.
3 High temperature and pressure push magma through
the openings like vents and fractures. The magma then
oozed out to form a lava dome but not cause any
explosive eruption.

Teacher will discuss briefly:

Guided Questions:

1. Why do volcanoes erupt?

2. How do volcanoes erupt?

ELABORATE

Guided Question

1. Is it possible for a volcano to have 2 to 3 volcanic eruptive style when it erupted?

 Yes, one of the good examples is Taal volcano; erupt on January 12, 2020, when a
phreatomagmatic eruption from its main crater spewed ashes over Calabarzon, Metro
Manila, and some parts of Central Luzon and Ilocos Region, resulting in the
suspension of school classes, work schedules, and flights in the area. The volcano
erupted on the afternoon of January 12, 2020, 43 years after its previous eruption in
1977.[6] According to PHIVOLCS director Dr. Renato Solidum, seismic swarms
began at 11 am and were later followed by a phreatic eruption from Volcano Island
Main Crater at around 1 pm Philippine Standard Time (UTC+8).[9] Loud rumbling
sounds were also felt and heard from the volcano island.

EXTEND
Guided question:
Teacher will apply the types of volcanoes based
on their shape, to familiar, or different context. 1. How does the temperature and pressure relate to volcanic eruption?
