Objectives:

Materials:
Steel Plates

Procedure:
1. Run-through welding butt joints on
1/8 inch (4 millimeter) or thicker
material. (Avoid thinner materials
since they require greater skill.)

2. Separate the squared edges of the

material about 1/16 inch (1.6
millimeter) and make a buttweld all
the way through with a 1/8 inch
electrode.

3. Perform a similar exercise on 1/4

inch (6 millimeter) material,
depositing a bead on each side of the
joint an fusing one to the another (no
bevel needed).

4. Practice making a single V-groove

weld on 1/4 inch (6 millimeter) plate
beveled 30

5. Start with a 1/8 inch electrode for the

first bead and finish with a 5/32 inch
(4 millimeter) electrode. Be sure to
penetrate about 1/32 inch (1
millimeter) beyond the bottom of the
“V” or root. 6.
