Chapter 1 Integumentary System Components

The
Integumentary
System
• IIntegumentary
t t S t
System (I t
(Integument):
t)
composed of skin, hair, nails, sweat
glands, oil glands, & mammary glands

Integumentary Functions Integumentary Structures

• Physical protection • Skin = cutaneous membrane:
• Regulation of body temperature – Epidermis = stratified squamous
(sweating vasodilation/vasoconstriction)
(sweating, epithelium
• Excretion (secretion) – Dermis = underlying, loose CT.
• Nutrition (synthesis of Vitamin D • Subcutaneous layer (not part of cutaneous
precursor) membrane) is deep to the dermis

• Sensation
S ti (via sensory receptors) • Accessory structures: hair, nails, +
• Immune defense many multicellular exocrine glands

Skin Structures & Functions Accessory Structures and Functions

The skin is also known as the cutaneous membrane

Integumentary Tissues The Integumentary System

• All 4 tissue types are present:
– Epithelium covers the surface.
– CT provides underlying stability
stability.
• Abundant blood vessels
– Smooth muscle in walls of blood
vessels and attached to hairs
• Arrector pili
– Neural tissue provides sensation;
controls blood vessel diameter

Epidermal Cell Types Layers of the Epidermis

• Keratinocytes = most abundant cells
– 4-5 layers in most areas outermost
layer
• Melanocytes: pigment cells
– Deep in epidermis
• Merkel cells: sensory cells
• Langerhans cells: have immune
functions
– Also known as Dendritic cells innermost
layer

Epidermal Cross-section Epidermal Layers & Cells

• Stratum germinativum (stratum

• Keratinocytes basale) = deepest layer
are presentt in
i
• Attached to basal lamina
all epidermal
layers • Cell types:
– Change
characteristics –Basal cells (stem cells for keratinocyte
as they are
pushed to the
production): divide in this layer
surface & die
– It takes 15-30
–Melanocytes = pigment-producing cells;
days for a secrete pigment (melanin)
keratinocyte to
reach the »Melanin is taken up by keratinocytes
surface

Epidermal Layers & Cells Epidermal Layers & Cells

• Stratum spinosum • Stratum lucidum: only in thick skin
– Contains primarily keratinocytes and – Present in palms & soles.
melanocytes – Cells similar to those in granulosum, but do not
stain well = “clear layer”
– Langerhans cells = primarily in this layer
• Compose ~5% of all cells in epidermis • Stratum corneum = surface layer; dead cells
– 5-30 layers of flttened, dead, interlocking cells.
• Stratum granulosum • Connected cells are shed in sheets.

– Keratinocytes manufacture large amounts of

• Keratinized skin (cornified) = epithelium
proteins (keratohyalin & keratin)
containing a large amount of keratin.
– Keratinocytes become thinner/flatter and • Everywhere on skin surface, except eyelids
eventually die

Thick vs. Thin Skin (Relative Epidermal Thickness) Skin: Fingerprints & Skin Color
Epidermal ridges form
complex whorls in thick
skin (e.g., fingerprints)

Skin Color is determined by

multiple factors, including
pigments, such as melanin
(of which there is more than
one type)

The Dermis & Hypodermis Hair Follicles & Hair

• Hair follicles = hair

forming organs
– Of epidermal origin

The Dermis
• Hair is a nonliving,
has 2 parts: keratinized structure
the papillary
layer & the – Extends past skin surface
reticular layer • Found in most areas
– 5 million hairs on body
• ~2% are on the head!
– Terminal (heavy) vs.
Vellus (“fuzz”)
The subcutaneous layer is also known as the hypodermis & superficial fascia

Cross section
Hair Follicle & Growth through hair Hair Growth Cycle
follicle

• Hair matrix = basal cells Hair Follicles go through Active (growth) and Resting stages
divide & push hair outward
• 2 major hair layers:
– Medulla = inner portion.
Contains soft keratin = flexible.
– Cortex = outer cells of the hair
matrix. Hard keratin = stiff.
• Cuticle = outer layer, dead
cells: coats hair
• Hair root = portion of hair
attached to follicle
• Shaft = portion of hair
exposed at surface

Skin Glands: Sebaceous & Sweat (Sudoriferous) Nails

Nail production occurs at the nail root

The eponychium is also known as the
