Dear Mrs. Burke,

I’m writing to express my interest in the operating room clinical nurse position and provide
context to my resume. As a recent graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, I am thrilled
to be applying for a position at Hoag Hospital Newport Beach. I believe my effective
communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, and my clinical experience fulfills the
needs of this position. I am passionate about working in healthcare interdisciplinary teams,
especially under unique circumstances such as the operating room. My academic background
and resilience in the healthcare field would enable me to be a valuable member and asset to this
hospital.

Over the past two years of my undergraduate career, I have participated in 500 clinical hours in
hospitals around the Phoenix metropolitan area. Through didactic and clinical experience, I was
able to use my communication and technical skills which strengthened my confidence in caring
for patients. During the past couple months in my transition to practice position, I was able to
take care of 4 patients on my own under the supervision of a registered nurse. My greatest
strengths are my ability to connect with patients, time management, and provide correct
documentation using Cerner. An example where I used great communication was explaining
pain medications to a post-op patient. I explained the indication, the adverse effects, and nursing
interventions for the med. I allowed time for the patient to ask questions and showed therapeutic
communication through listening to their concerns. This allowed us to have a better connection
and for them to build trust with me as their nurse. These skills would allow me to make a
positive impact on not only the healthcare team at Hoag Hospital, but also on the patients.

In addition to my academic background, I have extensive experience with volunteering and

shadowing. I have volunteered at my local food bank for 2 years proving timely and friendly care
to individuals from all walks of life. This experience has highlighted my detail to attention,
organizational skills, and most importantly my interpersonal skills. I have also completed around
100 hours of student shadow experience under a general surgeon at a trauma 1 hospital. I got to
experience the dynamic of the operating room and the registered nurse’s role.

My strong communication, extensive clinical experience, and desire to learn the roles of an
operating room nurse make me a strong fit for the clinical nurse position. I would love to hear
