Các em học sinh thân mến!

Exercise 5: Read the text and do the task below.
Last year I visited the Somerset Levels, a coastal plain and wetland area in Somerset,
South West England. This area is home to one of Somerset’s oldest traditional crafts -
willow basket making. Basket making began in the area a long time ago. At the beginning
of the 19th century, more than three thousand acres of willow trees were planted
commercially there because the area provided an excellent natural habitat for their
cultivation.
I’d seen willow baskets before I visited the Levels, but I was still amazed at the numerous
products created by the basket makers there. They make lobster pots, bread trays, and
even passenger baskets for hot air balloons.
Although the arrival of plastics in the 1950s caused the basket making industry to decline,
willow growing and basket making have continued to play a significant role in Somerset’s
rural economy. Willow growers and basket makers have dealt with this challenge by
finding new markets and innovative ways of using willow. They make willow charcoal for
artists and bower seats for gardens. Some even weave willow coffins. Therefore, people
here can still live on the craft that their great-grandparents passed down to them.

NEW YORK CITY
The City of New York, often called New York City or simply New York, is the most populous
city in the United States. With an estimated 2016 population of 8,537,673 distributed over
a land area of about 302.6 square miles (784 km2). New York City is also the most densely
populated major city in the United States.
Located at the southern tip of the state of New York, the city is the center of the New York
metropolitan area, one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. A global
power city, New York City exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media and
entertainment, art, fashion, research, technology, education, politics, and sports, its fast
pace defining the term New York minute. Home to the headquarters of the United
Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy and has been
described as the cultural, financial, and media capital of the world.
New York City traces its origin to its 1624 founding in Lower Manhattan as a trading post
by colonists of the Dutch Republic and was named New Amsterdam in 1626. The city and
its surroundings came under English control in 1664 and were renamed New York after
King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York. New York
served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country’s
largest city since 1790. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came
to the Americas by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is a symbol of the
United States and its democracy. In the 21th century, New York has emerged as a global
node of creativity and entrepreneurship, social tolerance, and environmental
sustainability, and as a world symbol of freedom and cultural diversity.

ADVANTAGES OF CITY LIFE
Some people prefer the quiet life of the countryside. However, cities have many benefits
over villages.

24 BÀI TẬP CUỐI TUẦN TIẾNG ANH LỚP 9 – TẬP 1

Firstly, city life is very convenient. Children growing up in villages do not have as much
access to education as children in cities. Villages may not have enough children to create
a school system that goes all the way through high school; these kids must go to cities to
continue their educations. Cities have multiple forms of education such as colleges and
universities. More libraries and museums are available in cities. Entertainment is readily
accessible in cities in the form of movie theaters, amusement parks and restaurants.
Secondly, city provides better health care condition. Villages may have a local doctors’
clinic, but cities often have multiple hospitals and doctors specializing in even rare
conditions. In a city, ambulances and firetrucks may take only minutes to arrive at the
scene. In villages, getting to a hospital in an emergency may take precious time.
Finally, it’s easier for people to have a good job and pursue their career.
Villages have a smaller population than cities, so there are fewer jobs available. Living in
the city provides people with thousands of career choices. Professionals have access to
large businesses, hospitals and educational facilities for work opportunities. People with
less education can more readily find jobs in customer service or entry-level jobs. Even
specialized jobs and careers focused around the arts are viable in a city with a large
population.
I think cities bring lots of benefits to their residents. As city populations increase, so do
businesses. People have fast access to their needs and wants in cities. As time passes,
more and more people all over the world leave villages and move to cities, seeking a new
life.

Vietnam teens devote more leisure time to cyberspace than reality
A recent survey of 400 students aged from 13 to 19 in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City has
illustrated an ‘immense gap’ in the lives of urban teenagers and highlighted worrying
problems about their conceptions, attitudes, and behavior.
The teenagers in the survey spent the most time within the four walls of classrooms, with
little left for sports or community-related activities.
Besides the time at school, 92 percent of students said they have ‘extra time’ for studies
at the homes of teachers for two or three subjects, including Mathematics and English.
Lack of career orientation
Regardless of their diligence in their studies, 46 percent of teens said they do not know
what type of career path they want to pursue.
It seems that many students consider their studies a duty, instead of a motivation to
possess knowledge.
In fact, parents spend less than two hours a day talking with their children. Most of this
time is spent at the dining table or watching television.
Sadly, most of these interactions between parents and children are uncomfortable for
teens, because they are often reprimanded for their social lives.
Consequently, 30 percent of teens blame their parents for disregarding their needs and
desires. Forty percent said they are often intimidated by their parents, and 50 percent
admitted that they are shy about telling private stories to their parents.

TRADITIONAL TET PREFERRED BY EVERYONE IN VIET NAM
I am Choi Yi Seob. I have been in Ha Noi for nearly five years. My wife and I enjoyed two
Tets in Ha Noi and two others in South Korea. This year, we will stay here. My wife – a
traditional Vietnamese woman and myself often go together every year to the flower
market to buy peach blossom, a kumquat tree and many flowers to decorate our house.
I have learned how to cook Vietnamese traditional dishes; however, I have to admit that
this is difficult and takes time to do well. Nem (spring rolls) is my favourite dish. I think Tet
is really a traditional custom and Viet Nam should keep it. It is better to celebrate it
according to the lunar calendar rather than solar because every country has its own
traditional customs. Tradition has to be the pride of the nation.
In our country, Lunar New Year, known as Seollal (also spelled Seolnal) is one of South
Korea’s major holidays.
Preparation for Seollal has similarities to the Tet of Viet Nam. The day before Seollal,
family members gather to prepare the dishes required for the ancestral rites offerings.
These must not only taste good but also look perfect.
While Viet Nam has banh chung (rice square cake), nem (spring rolls), xoi (sticky rice), gio
lua (pork-pie), South Korean has tteokguk (rice cake soup) and 20 other dishes such as
wild vegetables, Korean style pancakes, various types offish, japchae (noodles with meat
and vegetables) and many more (according to Mr Choi Yi Seob, Korean, Ha Noi).

HO CHI MINH CITY PLANS MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS
The city recently held a seminar on collaboration between investors and banks in so-called
breakthrough programmes.
Participating banks have signed loan agreements for eight projects, worth a total of
VND26 trillion (US$1.1 billion) under a public-private partnership (PPP) investment mode.
The projects include a North-South road worth VND18 trillion and Nguyen Tat Thanh
Street worth VND4.6 trillion.
The chairman of the city People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong said the loans for the
eight projects had created a push for future projects, as the city has a limited local budget.
More businesses are expected to invest under the PPP mode, he said.
Around 153 projects have been carried out under the PPP mode in HCM City, with total
investment of VND451 trillion, of which 23 projects worth a total of VND71 trillion have
been completed, and another 130 projects worth VND380 trillion are underway.
The city has asked the People’s Committee to take charge of planning upgrades of old
buildings and construction of new buildings.
To effectively handle the “breakthrough” programmes that are key to the city’s
development during the 2016-2020 period, the city needs a total of VND850 trillion in
funds. Sixty per cent of that total would be for anti-flooding, transport and infrastructure-

To access the free-of-charge app, users can visit www.giaothong.hochiminhcity.gov.vn on
their computers or smart phones or download the ‘TTGT Tp. Ho Chi Minh’ app on Android
smart phones.

volume of traffic, speed of vehicles, and traffic flow images at congested hotspots across

STRESS AND TEENAGERS
It’s very common for young people to feel stressed out from time to time. Stress is a
normal part of life and it can even be beneficial in some situations. However, if you’re
worried that your child is under a lot of stress and it’s been going on for a while or is
affecting their everyday life, there are things you can do to help them.
Causes of stress for teenagers:
Common things that teenagers say cause them stress include: homework and school
(especially exams), expectations and pressure to do well at school from parents and
family, their social relationships with friends and boyfriends or girlfriends and the issue of
sex, life challenges, such as leaving school or getting into tertiary studies or employment,
lack of time - having too much to do, feeling unprepared or overwhelmed, lack of sleep.
If you suspect your child is stressed, talk to them to try and determine if these or other
things are going on. If you can Identify why they’re feeling stressed, it will be easier to
help them address the cause and manage their stress appropriately.
Seek support if necessary. Stress that hangs around for a long period of time can be
harmful to your child’s health and well being. If your child has been showing signs of
stress, try our suggested strategies to support them. However, if your child has been
stressed for a long period of time, or if nothing seems to be helping, it’s a good idea to
seek some outside help. Have a chat to your family doctor, or consider giving your child
an opportunity to talk things over with a counsellor.

Learning Vietnamese to love Vietnam more
Learning Vietnamese is becoming more popular with foreigners living and working in
Vietnam. In addition to the language, they are learning more about Vietnam and its
people.
52-year-old Choi Byung Joon from the Republic of Korea, who now lives and works in
Hanoi, has been learning Vietnamese for 3 years after studying it for a year in Korea.
Mr Choi said, “I think the most difficult thing about Vietnamese is the 6 different tones.
They are very strange to Korean people. We find it difficult to up and down the tone when
speaking in Vietnamese. There are some Korean people who don’t know how to make the
tone, so few Vietnamese people understand what they are saying.”
Mr. Choi finds Vietnamese an interesting language, so he decided to continue studying
with a native teacher when he came to Vietnam.
His Vietnamese has been improving steadily thanks to a good study method and lots of
practice.
He said, “After I moved to Vietnam, I was taught by a teacher who can speak Korean. Then
I realized that I spoke Korean more than Vietnamese when talking with her. Last year, I
changed my teacher who can’t speak Korean, and my Vietnamese got better. She
pronounces words very clearly and beautifully.”

Ha Long Bay means ‘the Bay where the Dragon descends into’, is located in the Vietnam’s
northeastern seacoast, administratively belongs to Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province.
The islands are concentrated in two main zones: the southeast (belonging to Bai Tu Long
Bay), and the southwest (belonging to Ha Long Bay) forms the core zone of Ha Long Bay,
which was designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Site. This area incorporates 434 km2
with 775 islands, delimited by 3 points: Dau Go Island on the west, Ba Ham Lake on the
south and Cong Tay Island on the east.
Ha Long Bay’s ancient karst landscape is the result of complex geological processes taking
over 500 million years, from the earth’s movements, sea regression, down-warping
tectonics, and sea transgression, creating thousands of limestone islands emerging from
the sea.
Ha Long Bay, a mighty and unique artwork by nature with thousands of islands rising from
the emerald water, is the number-one tourist destination of northern Vietnam. Ha Long
Bay is recognized by UNESCO as the World Natural Heritage Site in 1994 and 2000for its
