Type of transformers:

1. Power transformer

2. Distribution transformer

3. Pulse transformer

4. Welding transformer (Arc)

5. Instrument transformer

a. Current transformer (CT)

b. Potential transformer (PT)

Power transformers: are used in transmission network of higher voltages for step-up and step down application
(400 kV, 200 kV, 110 kV, 66 kV, 33kV) and are generally rated above 200MVA.

Distribution transformers: are used for lower voltage distribution networks as a means to end user connectivity
A distribution transformer or service transformer is a transformer that provides the final voltage
transformation in the electric power distribution system, stepping down the voltage used in the distribution
lines to the level used by the customer.

A pulse transformer: is one kind of transformer that is designed & optimized for voltage pulse transmission in
between its two windings as well as to the connected load. These types of transformers are used for the
transmission of signals in control circuits with less power & the essential components within high-power SMPS.
The Pulse transformer diagram is shown below.

Instrument transformer: are designed to send secondary voltage and current to devices known as
“instruments.” Instruments include meters for measurement or protection relays for equipment protection. Meters
include voltmeters, ammeters, watt meters, and watt-hour meters.

inductor transformer: A transformer is a device made of two or more inductors, one of which is powered by AC,
inducing an AC voltage across the second inductor. If the second inductor is connected to a load, power will be
electromagnetically coupled from the first inductor's power source to that load.

Pulse Transformer: These transformers handle currents & voltages in the pulse form so mostly utilized like
Isolating Transformers within power electronic circuits to separate source & load. This kind of transformer is used
in radar, TV, digital computers, and many more. The main functions of pulse transformer are;

Welding transformer: is required which converts the high voltage and low current into a low voltage and high
current i.e. step down transformer. welding generally uses currents that are higher than can be reasonably
supplied by AC mains circuits and the required arc voltage is low once the arc is struck so the gain in available
current is a very major factor.

Auto transformer: has many uses and applications including the starting of induction motors, used to regulate
the voltage of transmission lines, and can be used to transform voltages when the primary to secondary ratio is
close to unity

Current Transformer (CT) is used to measure the current of another circuit. CTs are used worldwide to monitor
high-voltage lines across national power grids. A CT is designed to produce an alternating current in its
secondary winding that is proportional to the current that it is measuring in its primary.

Potential transformer: (PT) to present a negligible load to the supply being measured and have an accurate
voltage ratio and phase relationship to enable accurate secondary connected metering.
