External source of information

1 Link from ILO

2 Link from HSE website

I started my risk assessment by exploring the external sources of information, firstly I visited the international Labor Organization website where I found a code of
practice “safety and health in construction”

After that I visited British HSE website where I found “health and safety in construction HSG 150”

These sources helped me a lot in finding the hazard in my risk assessment and has very fruitful information.
Internal Source of information

1: Interview of mechanics

2: Records of workshop

After searching information from external sources, I went to workshop and talked to mechanics and assistant mechanics and by doing that I got to know a lot
about the workshop and hazards of workshop which cannot be easily identified by visual inspection. The information that I took from mechanics helped me to
figure out what control measures they are taking to prevent the hazards.

I also check the documents of workshop to figure out previous risk assessments, Inspection reports, audits reports, sickness and absent records and that helped
me to figure out hazards which can help me in my risk assessment.

While figuring controls for hazards that are found from internal and external sources. I used notes that I made during inspection of workshop and from HSE
website. This information helped me in figuring controls in my risk assessment.

Likelihood AND severity: 75 to 150 words
How effective the action is likely to be in controlling the risk: 100 to 150 words

Moral, general legal and financial arguments for ALL actions

Moral, general legal and financial MORAL ARGUMENT

arguments 1: Employer responsibility.
2: Reason of people to work.
If Injury or ill Health happen
1: effect on the workers.
2: effect on the families.
3: financial crisis.
4: fear of losing job to worker.
5: impact on social life.
6: the society demands/pressure.
Financial Argument:
1: cost of damage occurred during accident (to product, equipment,
tools)
2: cost associated with workers (first aid cost, hospital bills, sick pay)
3: legal issues cost (cost of fines, legal assistance)
Legal Arguments:
1: Employer legal responsibilities ( C155 and R164)
2: Consequences of enforcement action
 Improvement notice
 Prohibition notice
 Fines
 Prosecution
 Closure of work
3: Civil courts consequences
 Hiring of lawyer
 Fines from civil courts
 Legal fees
 Compensation to worker

Justification for action 1

Action oil changer machine should be provided to avoid spillage.

(Hazard category slip and trip)

Specific legal arguments

Consideration of likelihood AND severity The likelihood is that worker is working on cars and floor is
Slipperybecause of spillage on floor which can cause a
worker to fall.
This table is used to suggest the severity
 Negligible: no injury or damage occur
 Minor: cuts, demanding first aid equipment damage.
 Major: fracture, demanding treatment in hospital,
Can cause damage to any machine or car.
 Fatal: disability, Death, machines loss.
The severity of this hazard that we can see from the table
is that it might cause bone fractures, injuries, cuts and
these can require hospital treatment.
How effective the action is likely to be in
Providing an oil changer machine will reduce the chances of
controlling the risk. This should include:
slip as it can cause no spillage on floor so it prevents the

indicated in your risk assessment; Time scale that I provided is 1 month as it has to be purchased
and
 whether you think the action will fully from shop and that purchase require separate budget and it
control the risk. can take time up to 1 month.
Buying oil changing machine can prevent oil spillage maximum
but workers should wear safety shoes to avoid slipping.

Justification for action 2

Action Car lifter should be provided so worker can work under car easily.
(Hazard category work related upper limb disorder)
Specific legal arguments

Consideration of likelihood AND severity There a likelihood of worker working under the car in awkward
Position might getback bone injury.
This table is used to suggest the severity
 Negligible: no injury or damage occur
 Minor: cuts, needs first aid, damage to equipment.
 Major: demands hospital treatment, sprain and
Strain.
 Fatal: Back bone injury, disability.
The severity of this hazard is worker might get
disability because of spinal cord injury.

How effective the action is likely to be in

By getting car lifter worker can work under car while standing
controlling the risk. This should include:
and can reduce the risk of any kind of injuries.
 the intended impact of the action;
 justification for the timescale that you Time scale I provide is 1 month because this machine has to
indicated in your risk assessment; be purchased and that requires a separate budget.
and
 whether you think the action will fully Getting car lifter can reduces chances of upper limb disorder
control the risk. but worker should be educated as well.

Justification for action 3

Action Lifting hoist should be provided to lift heavy weights.

(Hazard category Manual handling)
Specific legal arguments

Consideration of likelihood AND severity The likelihood of worker lifting heavy weights is that he might
Get back bone injury because of lifting heavy weights in wrong
Posture.
This table is used to suggest the severity
 Negligible: no injury or damage occur
 Minor: minor sprain.
 Major: fracture, demanding treatment in hospital,
Can cause damage to the thing he is lifting.
 Fatal: disability, Death, equipment loss.
The severity of this hazard is worker might get sprain, or
back bone injury which requires a hospital treatment.

How effective the action is likely to be in

By getting lifting hoist the workers can lift and move heavy parts
controlling the risk. This should include:
and other things very easily and this can reduce the risk of any

control the risk. By buying lifting hoist we can minimize the risk manual handling
but we also needs to educate the workers about how to use it.
Part 4: Review, communicate and check
Suggested word counts for each section:
 Planned review date or period and reasoning for this: 50 - 100 words
 How the risk assessment findings will be communicated and who needs to
know the information: 100 - 150 words
 Follow up on the risk assessment: 100 - 150 words.

Planned review date/period with As per garage policy and legal requirement to review the
reasoning risk assessment every 12 months that is why I suggest the
date for review is 20 December, 2022. The risk assessment
will also be reviewed if there Is certain changes occur:
 Number of workers
 Shift pattern
 New technology
 National legislation
 Working process
 Key personal
 Management changes
 After an accident
