TOPIC1a - GENERAL LISTENING (Main Ideas, Supporting Details, Sequencing)
The skill of listening is very important for a student in particular because a large part
of his day-to-day activities involves listening-to lectures, instructions, discussions
and so on. In order to listen effectively, you must be able to understand what you are
listening to, break down the information you have obtained into manageable parts and
identify specific information. You must also be able to analyse what you hear. In other
words, you must be able to form opinions, draw conclusions, make inferences,
predict outcomes and generally evaluate the information that you are listening to.
When you listen for the main idea, you listen generally in order to find out:
• the main subject or topic of the news item, speech, talk or discussion you are
listening to
