have to do is to solve the puzzle by adding and
subtracting the letter for you to get the correct word.
Are you ready? Yes ma’am!

For number 1 puzzle.

CANTER – TER + CENTER – NTER + R =
What is the answer? CANCER, ma’am.

Very good! The correct answer is CANCER.

Let us now proceed with number 2 puzzle.

BROKE-KE+ANCHOR-AOR+ITIS =
What is the answer? BRONCHITIS, ma’am.

You got it right! Our second puzzle is

BRONCHITIS. Are you having fun? Yes, ma’am!

That’s good to hear. Let us now proceed to our third

puzzle.
EMPTY – TY + HYPE – PE + SEMA =
What do you think is the answer? EMPHYSEMA, ma’am!

Correct! The answer for that is

EMPHYSEMA. Let us see, what would be our
last puzzle.
WRIGHT – GHT + CRINKLES – CRI = WRINKLES, ma’am!
What is the answer for our last puzzle?

That is correct! The answer for our last puzzle is

Now, based from the answer that we got from our It is all about cigarette smoking, ma’am.
puzzle. What do you think is our topic for today?

Very good! Our topic for today is all about Negative

Health Impact of Cigarette Smoking. This is the
learning competency in this lesson.
-Analyzes the negative health impact of cigarette
smoking (H8S-IVb-c-29)

Let us take a look of the objectives to our lesson.

At the end of lesson, you will be able to:
a) identify the harmful short- and long-term effects
of cigarette smoking on the different parts of the
body;
b) determine the impact of cigarette smoking on
the family, environment and community; and
c) create an advocacy materials against cigarette
smoking.

Let us now have a deep understanding about our

lesson.

C. LESSON PROPER

Let us see what is the difference between cigarette

and smoking? Will you please read, Ana? Cigarette is lit on one end and smoked while
Smoking poses significant dangers to the health
of most people.
Thank you so much, Ana. Cigarette is s a narrow
cylinder containing burnable material, typically
tobacco that is rolled into thin paper for
smoking. Smoking harms nearly every organ of the
body and affects a person's overall health.
Base from the data of the WHO, there were 8 million
people dying from tobacco. 7 million of those deaths
are direct tobacco use and 1.2 million are result of
second-hand smoke.

Anyway, what is the difference between first-hand

smoke, second-hand smoke and third hand
smoke? Yes, Ron? (Students will give their idea)

That’s right! When we say first-hand smoke, this is

the smoke that was inhaled by the smoker, second-
hand smoke is the smoke that were exhaled by the
smoker and inhaled by others and the third hand
smoke is the nicotine residue that remains on the
surfaces.
Did you get it, class? Yes, ma’am.

Okay! Let us now proceed with the Harmful effects

of cigarette smoking in our body. We will discuss
first some short term effects of cigarette smoking.
These are the following:

• Bad Breath (with picture)

• Stained teeth and fingers (with picture)
• Reduced sense of taste and smell (with picture)
• Premature wrinkles (with picture)
• Decreased lung function (with picture)
• Decreased immune function (with picture)

Do you have any question regarding the harmful

effects of cigarette smoking? None, ma’am.
That’s good. Let us now discuss some harmful long-
term effects of cigarette smoking in our body,
especially in the Brain, Heart, Lungs, Mouth, Skin
and Eyes. First one is the brain, let us see what will
happen to our brain when we smoke. Will you please
read, Mae? Nicotine addiction is difficult to overcome
because it alters the brain.
As we all know that cigarette nicotine is just
addictive as heroin because of that it alters the brain
that’s why you may experience anxiety, irritability,
and severe nicotine cravings.
Do you understand class? Yes, ma’am.

Let us see the effect of cigarette smoking in

our heart. Will you please read, Mark? Smoking raises the blood pressure and put stress
in the heart.
Because of the Carbon monoxide that we inhaled
from the smoke of cigarette it contributes to a lack of
oxygen, making the heart work even harder. This
increases the risk of heart diseases including heart
attacks. Is it clear, class? Yes, ma’am.

Another one that affects our body when we smoke is

our lungs that may lead to bronchitis and
emphysema. Smoking also destroys the tiny air sacs
or alveoli in the lungs that allow oxygen exchange.
When alveoli were destroyed, the disease
emphysema develops and it causes severe shortness
of breath and can lead to death. Can you follow
class? Yes, ma’am.

Let us proceed to the harmful effects of cigarette

smoking in our mouth. What do you think are the
oral health problems that we can get when we
smoke? Yes, Leah? Gum diseases, ma’am.

Very good! That is one, aside from that smokers

have more oral problems like mouth sores, gum
diseases and mouth and throat cancers.
Another parts of the body that may affect when we
smoke is our skin. What will happen to our skin
when we smoke? Will you please read, Al? Smoking causes the skin to become dry and
brittle.

When our skin becomes dry and brittle, it results in

having wrinkles and stretchmark.
Is it clear class? Yes, ma’am.

That’s good. Let us now proceed with another part of

the body that may affect when we smoke which is the
Eyes. Smoking raises the chances of getting cataracts
and macular degeneration that may lead to blindness.
Do you have any question regarding the harmful
long-term effects of cigarettes smoking in our None, ma’am.
body?

Since we already know the harmful effects of

cigarette smoking in our body, we will now proceed
to the Impact of Cigarette Smoking on the Family,
Environment and Community. What do you think is (The students will give their idea about the
the impact of Cigarette smoking in the Family? impact of cigarette smoking on the family and
their answers may vary)

Very good! All of your answers are correct in

addition to that the family members can inhaled the
smoke coming from the direct smoker, they may
experience painful headache, nausea, and dizziness in
response to small amount of smoke.
What about the impact of cigarette smoking in the It pollutes the air, ma’am.
environment? Yes, Micah?

Exactly! Smoking pollutes the air we inhale and

everything else in our environment. Let us now
proceed in the community. What do you think is the People may inhaled the smoke coming from the
impact of cigarette smoking in the community? smoker.

That’s right! That’s why there is a law that protects

the people in the community from cigarette smoke
which is the RA 9211 or Tobacco Regulation Act of
2003. None, ma’am.
Is there any question class?

D. GENERALIZATION

Let us see if you really understand our discussion for

this morning. What are the harmful short-term effects
of cigarette smoking? The short-term effects of cigarette smoking are
Yes, Stephen? bad breath, stained teeth and fingers, reduced
sense of taste and smell, premature wrinkles,
decreased lung function and decreased immune
function.

Very good! What about the long-term effects of (Students will give the long-term effects of
cigarette smoking in our body? cigarette smoking)

Very good class! What about the impact of cigarette

smoking on the Family, Environment and (Lyra will tell her own understanding about the
Community? Yes, Lyra? impact of cigarette smoking on the Family,
Environment and Community)

It seems that you really understand our lesson.

cigarettes will not only limit a person’s ability to reach
for his dreams and ambitions. The moment he suffers
its effects, it will slow down his physical capabilities.
