1. Presentation
So for today’s discussion we will be tackle about the
Varieties and Registers of Spoken and Written Language.

(the teacher will going to discuss and present her

PowerPoint)

The varieties of language and the registers of language in

spoken and written.

So that is why this topic is part of the purposive

communication in able to understand that our language is not
just a language of its own but we should know that our
language is part of connecting with other languages. We
came from a different backgrounds so that we can
understand others by looking at the varieties of language.
Also to be aware in the different levels of formality of the
language that we use in different people or situations.

(the teacher will read the next page of her PowerPoint)

During your senior high school, you must have encountered

the term World Englishes (WE) or varieties of English in
class. We actually stands for the localized varieties of
English as they are used or spoken in certain areas. In the
Asian context, the concept was introduced by Braj Kachru.

(the teacher will explain what she read)

So we all know that English is our universal language

because majority of the countries understand and speak
English language but did you know how it spread?

Well, 300 years at least English is spread across the world

and it continues to spread and change.
As English spread across the globe it came to contact with a
range of indigenous languages and the interaction between
these languages led to new varieties of English that we know
now as World Englishes.

 The Inner Circle presents the countries where
English is the primary language and is used in daily
life and government institutions, such as the United
States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada,
Australia, and New Zealand.
 The Outer Circle includes countries that have British
colonial ties, and English is widely used in social life
or in the government sector.
Most of the countries that belong to this circle are former
colonies of the British Empire, such as India, Malaysia,
Singapore, Ghana, Kenya, and others. The use of English in
these countries is English as a second language.
 The Expanding Circle includes countries that
introduce English as a foreign language in education,
mainly for the purpose of communicating in English
with the Inner and Outer Circles. Such countries
include Turkey, Saudi Arabia, The Emirates, Japan,
China, Korea, and others. The students will type their
answers in the comment
section in the goggle meet.
Okay class, before we will proceed to the next topic, I want
you to type again the different places in every circle. The
first 5 students will have their additional points.
