I. Background
The majority of coffee roasteries in Indonesia still rely on a human to sort defective coffee
beans in their process. The process flowchart below shows that sorting contributes the most
duration in the process after resting (Figure 1). This has a high chance to cause a bottleneck. The
sorting process is also considered as a non-value adding process which is a critical waste of the
whole process. Moreover, uncertain demand forces small roasteries to hire daily workers which
has a high operational cost.

Almost all processes start with weighing, roasting, and packing already involved machines
with the support of humans as minimum as possible like moving the coffee beans from one process
to another and filling the coffee beans into the machine. Therefore, it is critical that the sorting
process is needed to be replaced with the machine as well to streamline the process as adding more
workers is ineffective, inaccurate, and costly.

II. Project Scope

A. Project objective

Design and create a coffee sorting machine with the ability to sort 10 kg of coffee beans in
less than 20 mins with an accuracy of 95% in 3 months. The goal of the coffee sorting machine is
to improve the sorting process from manual to automatic machine so that the sorting time will be
decreased, and the bottleneck will be solved.

D. Project requirements
Functional:
• The sorting system shall be able separate requirements: coffee bean and defect coffee
bean.
• The sorting system shall prevent strange things from entering the machine.
• The sorting system shall separate different color levels of sorting.

Non-functional:
Performance
• The sorting system shall perform quality control better than human eyes.
• The time of sorting shall be less than 20 mins for 10 kg coffee beans.

Technological
• The sorting system shall contain camera sensors.
• The sorting system shall contain mechanical actuators.

Safety
• The system prevents short circuit
• The machine would be automatically turned off if something went wrong

E. Limitations and Exclusions

• The cost should not be more than 20 million rupiah
• The project should be done in 4 months
• The machine dimension should not exceed 1m x 1m x 1m
