Reading of the story
The Lion Who Snored

Once on a toy shelf in the room of some children, there lived an extraordinary lion.
Why was he extraordinary? This lion had a problem – he SNORED.
Every night, all the other toy animals hardly got any sleep at all. They had tried
everything to sleep well despite the lion’s snoring but to no avail. They told the lion that he
snored and do you know what he said?
“No, that couldn’t be me! I hear someone else snoring all night long and it keeps
me awake!” the lion argued.
So telling the lion about his snoring problem didn’t help.
They tried earplugs and warm milk. They hid their heads under pillows. Some
other animals tried going to sleep first, so they would already be asleep when the lion began
snoring. Do you think all of these worked?
No, they didn’t.
They had just about given up hope, when one day the children’s mother decided
to take off some toy animals from the shelf. She put them in a packing box and dusted the
shelf. Among the toys she had kept was the lion that snored. When she had finished cleaning
the room, she left without taking the box. It stood on the shelf.
That night, the animals had a good sleep. The lion that snored had gone into
storage. Early the next morning, one toy bunny woke up, wriggled his nose, and thought.
“This morning I feel great! I wonder why I slept so well.” The bunny looked around, and
then he noticed for the first time that the lion that snored wasn’t there.
As the other animals woke up, they realized that they too had slept well all night.
While they were talking about life on the shelf without the lion, the children came
into the room. The animals became very quiet. They heard the children say, “Mom said she
put all the baby toys and animals away. But I think she took some of the wrong animals. I
know my favorite lion is missing. I’m going to find him.”
That night, after the children had gone to sleep, the bunny crept to the box on the
shelf, pulled its lid open, and shook the lion, “Hey, Lion! We hate to say this, but well, we
really missed you last night. We all feel much safer when you’re here with us on the toy
shelf.”
“Well,” the lion who snored began, “last night I thought I missed being with all of
you too. And I know that you don’t like me when I snore, so I’d like to try to stop snoring, if
you will help me. Then all of us can get a good night’s sleep every night!”
So, the animals took turns helping the lion wake up and turn over if he started to
snore. But sometimes the animals just let the lion snore. They decided that his snoring was a
reminder that he was still there, protecting them throughout the night.
