PART 2: REFLECTION
SECTION 3
New words/phrases:
- stereotype /ˈsteriətaɪp/ (n) =a fixed idea or image that many people have of a
particular type of person or thing, but which is often not true in reality
Ex: cultural/gender/racial stereotype
- robust /rəʊˈbʌst/ (a) = strong and healthy
- consensus /kənˈsensəs/ (n) = an opinion that all members of a group agree with
+ consensus (about/on something)
Eg: She is skilled at achieving consensus on sensitive issues
- marginally /ˈmɑːdʒɪnəli/ (adv) = very slightly; not very much
- clamour /ˈklæmə(r)/ = to demand something loudly

Paraphrase:
- the eldest child is caring = expected to look after the younger ones
- a middle child is co-operative = generally eager to please and helpful
- the youngest child is outgoing = a social and confident child who made friends easily
- a twin is introverted = quite shy in social situations
- an only child is selfish = loners who think the world revolves around them
- a child (with much other siblings) is independent = grow up more quickly and
expected to do basic things for themselves
- neglected to include family size = didn’t take into consideration was family size
- mainly thanks to their roles as teachers for their younger siblings = they benefit from
being teachers for their younger siblings
- stand up for oneself = defend myself
- say sorry = put up with each other

What I’ve learnt from my mistakes:

- Some useful phrases:
+ take into consideration = to think about (something) before one makes a decision
or forms an opinion
+ socio-economic status = the social standing or class of an individual or group
+ marginally high academic performance = impressive academic results
+ robust evidence = strong evidence

What I’ve learnt from the listening:

The listening is about how your family position influences certain personality traits.
The idea “Sibling relationship has become a very beneficial thing to people.”
Interestingly, the answer is “yes” because people should protect themselves. We had
some unpleasant arguments and had to confront each other; however, most of the time,
we lived in harmony peacefully enough.

SECTION 4
New words/phrases:
- eucalyptus /ˌjuːkəˈlɪptəs/ (n) = a tall straight tree with leaves that produce an oil with
a strong smell, that is used in medicine
- disinfectant /ˌdɪsɪnˈfektənt/ (n) = a substance that kills bacteria, used for cleaning
- secrete /sɪˈkriːt/ (v) = to produce a liquid substance
- proliferate /prəˈlɪfəreɪt/ (v) = to increase rapidly in number or amount
SYNONYM multiply
- at the expense of (phr) = so as to cause harm to or neglect of
Eg: He had no need to protect their reputation at the expense of his own

Paraphrase:
- food = the nectar from its flowers
- its leave provide oil = oil extracted from eucalyptus leaves
- is used to make a disinfectant = we can kill germs with a disinfectant
- lime used for making roads = lime was being used in the construction of roads
- a substance containing sugar = a solution which has sugar in it
- high-frequency bushfires have impact on vegetation, resulting in the growth of grass
= the frequency of bushfires in a particular region affects the type of vegetation that
grows there
- mid-frequency bushfires result in the growth of eucalyptus forests = the bushfires are
rather less frequent, this results in the growth of eucalyptus forests
- low-frequency bushfires result in the growth of dry forests = frequency of bushfires
to low levels has led to dry forest

What I’ve learnt from my mistakes:

- secrete /sɪˈkriːt/ (the word I mispronounced)
- at the expense of (phr) = so as to cause harm to or neglect of (I misunderstood the
meaning of the phrase)
- secrete a solution = propose a solution

What I’ve learnt from the listening:

- The eucalyptus (also known as the gum tree), which grows all over Australia, can
live up to 400 years. On the one hand, the listening mentions why it’s essential and
describe some problems if it faces at present. On the other hand, the eucalyptus
numbers are dramatically falling because the trees are dying off prematurely. The
listening can discuss the reason for this
