Educational Crisis
An Investigation on the Relationship Between Academic Performance and Coping
Strategies Among Employed Senior High School Students at Emilio Aguinaldo
College During an Educational Crisis
Senior high school students who are employed encounter numerous obstacles to
effectively managing their time as they strive to balance their academic
obligations with their work commitments. This study examines whether the
primary factor influencing their academic performance is the ineffective coping
strategies or the significant impact of the ongoing educational crisis in the
Philippines. The research focuses on a specific group of senior high school
students who are employed and studying at Emilio Aguinaldo College Manila.
The study aims to address the following key questions:
1. How does the country’s academic crisis affect the students?
2. What are the predominant coping strategies employed by senior high
school students at Emilio Aguinaldo College when facing simultaneous
employment and educational crisis challenges, and how do they affect
their ability to maintain the minimum academic performance required for
graduation?
3. Does the diversity of employment types (part-time, full-time, gig work)
among senior high school students at Emilio Aguinaldo College during an
educational crisis relate to disparities in academic achievement, and how
do these students modify their coping strategies to navigate these
variations?

As the Philippine’s education system hits rock bottom and many students
encounter difficulties meeting the academic requirements imposed by our
educational system, it is essential to acknowledge that this crisis does not only
revolve around students; it is a reflection of our country’s government's failure to
make education accessible and quality for all. A 2021 study by the Philippine
Business for Education (PBEd) found that the Philippines has one of the most
prolonged school hours in the world. The study also shows a lack of access to
quality education because "children from low-income families are less likely to
attend school and receive quality education.” The report also found that working
students are more likely to drop out than non-working students.
Students find themselves trying to balance their piled-up academic workloads
with their jobs’ demands; it becomes more complex when an educational crisis
disrupts the typical learning environment. A study by the International Journal of
Education found that "working students with higher levels of workload were more
likely to have lower academic performance.” The study also found that working
students were more likely to experience stress, anxiety, and depression, which can
also contribute to poor academic performance.
Given the importance of this research, we intend to investigate the relationship
between academic performance of senior high school students working during an
educational crisis. While it’s evident that these factors influence each other, there
is a significant gap in research that needs to be further explored.
Existing studies usually concentrate on academic performance alone or delve into
coping strategies without taking into account the complex context of educational
crises and working students. This research highlights the need to investigate the
experiences, processes, and outcomes of senior high school students confronted
with these complex challenges.
The chosen participants for this study are the Grade 11 and 12 senior high school
students of Emilio Aguinaldo College-Manila. The target number for this study
ranges from a minimum of 30 to a maximum of 50 participants. As this is
quantitative research, the participants will answer through a survey made on
Google Forms.
