5-Comprehensions
3-Read the following passage, then choose the correct answer from a,
b, c or d:
Due to the global pandemic, the Egyptian Ministry of ICT
noted an almost 50% increase in internet consumption as
workers were encouraged to work from home. Many saw
this as a positive move and some companies have closed
their offices as their employees continue to work from
home. However, there are also disadvantages that need to
be considered.
A significant advantage for the company is increased
productivity. The home office ensures a higher level of
efficiency as it is adapted perfectly to the employee. There
are no distractions by workmates or background noise and
they have their favourite food too! With less time needed to
commute, they can spend more time with their families. This
increases well-being which, in turn, can increase
productivity.
Despite the many advantages, there are also some
disadvantages. Many who worked from home claimed that
they worked more hours than in the office. Furthermore,
some complained that although they saved money on
transport they had increased costs in water and electricity.
Poor furniture or physical space is also another issue to
take into account. However, the biggest problem has been
70
the feeling of isolation and lack of personal contact with
workmates. With 300 million workers globally suffering from
mental health issues as a result of working from home,
doctors are claiming mental health problems will be the next
problem to affect the world.

1 Read the following passage, then answer the questions :

Everybody likes to feel that she or he is special. Sadly, many of us

grow up believing that we're not special at all. We wish that we could
be more attractive or better at sports. We wish we had more money or
more beautiful clothes. Like the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, or the
Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz, we think we're not good enough
just as we are. In the film, The Tin Man wishes he had a heart. The
Scarecrow wishes that he had a brain, and the Lion wants courage.
Eventually, each of them realizes that he already has what he wants.
Nearly all parents want us to be the best we can be. They occasionally
attempt to encourage us to do better by comparing us to others. They
mean well, but the message we usually get is that we're not good
enough. We start to believe that the only way we can be special is by
being better than somebody else, but we are frequently disappointed.
There will always be somebody out there that is better than we are at
something. There are a lot of people around who may not be as
intelligent as we are, but who are better at sports. Or they may not be
as handsome, but they have more money. It is unthinkable for us to be

better than everybody else all the time. Like the Tin Man, the
Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion, we all need what we believe will
make us better people. Our parents often forget to tell us that we are
special, that we are good enough just as we are. Either way, it's up to
us to remind them sometimes that each of us, in our own way, is

special

2 Read the following passage, then answer the questions :
By now, we all know the problem with plastic. Every year, over 300
million tonnes of it are produced, with fifty percent being single-use
plastic items, and 14million tonnes reaching the ocean. But why does
the plastic we manufacture and use on land end up in the sea?
Inadequate waste disposal can come from individual citizens littering
or big companies illegally dumping large quantities of rubbish. Once
wind and rain, or a large truck, have helped plastic make its way into
the water, it can stay there for 450 years, which is how long it takes
plastic to decompose. However, it doesn’t stay as a bottle or a straw
for all that time; due to the effects of the Sun, wind, and other natural
factors, plastic breaks down into tiny particles called microplastics.
When plastic is large, it can easily cause death to marine life, but when
it’s very small, it can make its way up the food chain into our own
stomachs. As plastic is made from chemicals, it could cause damage
to our bodies. This global problem has been exposed in recent years,
but one aspect that might have been ignored is its impact on individual
countries. Tourism and infrastructure can be massively disrupted by
heaps of plastic floating around. Doyou enjoy relaxing and playing on a
pristine beach with its golden sand and crystal clear waves? Now,
imagine jumping over or swimming through piles of plastic. Many
places, such as Bali, have been impacted financially by the amount
of plastic on their coasts because tourism suffers when holidaymakers
are discouraged. Plastic rubbish also blocks waterways in towns and
cities, which can lead to higher risks of flooding and therefore costly
repairs.
Q25: According to the passage, at this point in time, everybod………..
Ⓐ always disposes of their own litter
Ⓑ uses single-use plastic
Ⓒ is still unaware of how much plastic we produce
Ⓓ is aware of why plastic is an issue

ⒹFailing to throw away rubbish correctly
Q27: The underlined word decompose means to………………… .
Ⓐsit in the sun Ⓑmake one’s way
Ⓒ break down Ⓓ cause death
Q28: The best summary of the third paragraph can be
that…………………… .
Ⓐ humans eat fish with single-use plastic
Ⓑ weather can remove plastic from the sea
Ⓒ large plastics can harm animals, but small plastics can harm humans
Ⓓ plastic will remain in its complete forms forever
Q29: According to the passage, humans might end up with plastic in
their digestivesystems if they……………………….. .
Ⓐeat fish Ⓑuse bottles and straws

3 Read the following passage, then answer the questions :
We may think of dinosaurs as dangerous and powerful, but what
would you say if you found out that they caught colds and coughs?
Scientists have come across something they have never seen before:
lumps in the neck of a dinosaur. They believe that these were caused
by a virus that affected breathing. The fossil that led to this finding was
of a long-necked herbivorous, or plant-eating, dinosaur that the
scientists have nicknamed Dolly. This dinosaur was discovered in
1990 in Montana, USA, and it is thought to be around 150 million years
old. When looking at the neck, scientists located peculiar bony bumps
in places that would have been connected to the dinosaur’s lungs.
Due to this location, it is believed that the viral infection that affected
this dinosaur was a respiratory illness. Usually, diseases that affect
breathing don’t have an impact on bones, so Dolly must have been
very ill. Although this wasn’t great for Dolly, it is exciting for those
interested in the life of dinosaurs. Most diseases affect the organs and
skin rather than the skeleton. But it is that hard organic matter that is
most likely to be preserved in fossils, which are all that scientists have
available to investigate the things that affected dinosaurs’ bodies.
When looking for signs of illness in dinosaurs from millions of years
ago, most of the evidence so far has only been found in their
teeth, knees, and elbow joints. Experts can study these issues and
determine more about the evolution of dinosaurs; in fact, the infection
that Dolly had seems to be almost identical to one found in birds today;
a fact that further confirms the link, first revealed in the 19th
century, between these animals.
Q25: The main idea of the passage is………………………...
Ⓐdinosaurs died millions of years ago Ⓑthe dangers of viruses
Ⓒa new discovery Ⓓdinosaurs were all killed by infections
Q26: Despite their………………….. ,dinosaurs could also get runny

Ⓐ it told them about the dinosaur’s teeth and joints
Ⓑ they don’t know much about dinosaur illnesses not related to bones
Ⓒ Dolly was discovered in America
Ⓓ it was a fossil of soft organic material
Q29: Which of the following is not true about the dinosaur that had the
neck lumps?
Ⓐ It didn’t eat meat.
Ⓑ It was alive 150 million years ago.
Ⓒ The scientist who discovered it was called Dolly
Ⓓ The neck lumps were on the dinosaur’s bones.
Q30: Scientists are……………..that the dinosaur they found had been

4 Read the following passage, then answer the questions :
Technology has become crucial to our lives in the 21st century. We
use it fo work, entertainment, communication, and so on. Most people
would struggle to live without it. However, until now, technology has
remained mainly external to our bodies. But what if we are about to
merge with our technology? Nanomedicine is one technology
anticipated to become a reality very soon. With technology and the
human body, medicine has always been a pioneer, with devices such
as pacemakers and hearing aids already existing for decades.
Nanomedicine stands apart from these other medical technologies
because of its very small size. The word “nano” refers to things that
are impossible or very hard for humans to see without the aid of a
microscope. One potential use of this technology would be that of
Nanorobots. Nanorobots, which are microscopic robots, could
theoretically be injected into patients to detect or repair damages.
This process could be carried out at a molecular or even atomic level,
making highly dangerous diseases a thing of the past. However, it’s
still unclear whether or not this technology is practical or even
possible. The second, more widespread technology we see even
today is that of human microchip implants. The microchips are usually
injected under the skin and then positioned during a very minor
procedure. Their main use is storing data. Among the information they
can hold are keycards, medical history, and payment cards. By
eliminating external cards and data storage, this technology could one
day revolutionise our lives. As time passes and technology advances,
new technologies are inevitably invented. It is only a matter of time
until some of this technology is integrated into our bodies. Whether this
is a positive or negative thing, however, remains to be seen.
Q25: What is the main idea of the text?
Ⓐ Why the future of medicine is going to be dangerous.
Ⓑ How technology will one day replace our bodies altogether.
Ⓒ The use of internal technology within our bodies.
Ⓓ How future technology is going to be very expensive.
Q26: Which of the following is a good summary for the first paragraph?
Ⓐ Technology is extremely important and we will soon incorporate it
into our bodies.
Ⓑ Technology is about to reach its peak and we should be grateful.
Ⓒ Too many people do not understand the importance of technology.
Ⓓ We rely on technology too much in our lives and need to replace it.
Q27: What is the meaning of the underlined word crucial?
ⒶAnnoying ⒷUnnecessary Ⓒ Important Ⓓ Expensive
Q28: According to the text, how could nanorobots be important for
medicine?
Ⓐ They would be a lot cheaper than other treatments.
Ⓑ They would be able to completely replace doctors.
Ⓒ They would allow people to carry out medical procedures in their
own homes.
Ⓓ They would make dangerous illnesses no longer a threat.
Q29: According to the text, why might we never see nanorobots used
in patients?
Ⓐ They are still only a theory and are yet to be proven possible.
Ⓑ Once inside the body, they could accidentally cause damage to the patient.
Ⓒ They are extremely expensive and most hospitals couldn’t afford
them.
Ⓓ There are ethical concerns when it comes to using robots inside a
patient.
Q30: According to the text, what is one example of internal technology
that is already in use?
ⒶMicrochip implants Ⓑ Automatic language translation
ⒸBrain chips Ⓓ Internal diagnostic readings
Q31: According to the passage, how could microchip implants benefit us?
Ⓐ They will make technology less expensive.
Ⓑ We will be able to show them off to our friends.
Ⓒ We will be able to track our children.
Ⓓ They will end the need for external cards and data storage.
Q32: According to the text, how could the use of internal technology
affect our lives?
Ⓐ It could make our lives more dangerous.
Ⓑ It could make our lives more expensive.
Ⓒ It could make our lives more exciting.
Ⓓ It could make our lives safer and easier.
Read the following passage, then answer the questions :
Health experts urge people to maintain a healthy lifestyle that involves
good nutrition and regular exercise, with the goal of improving general
well-being and strength. But what about the mind? One healthy
method to battle difficult situations is a practice called mindfulness.
Mindfulness is your awareness of what is happening in your mind,
whether it is positive or negative. It is a mental exercise of learning
how to react wisely, instead of blindly, to things that happen to you.
Mindfulness allows you to choose what will strengthen your mind and
put it into action as well as pick what you ought to let go of.
One benefit of mindfulness is dealing with negative thoughts. Being
aware of the negativity entering your mind enables you to control it
before it affects your mood. Another advantage of practising
mindfulness is being aware of positive emotions and using them to
guide your mental state. You must be aware of your own thinking and
feeling processes. Since mindfulness is a habit, it requires training
your consciousness and senses to focus on the surrounding
environment to stay in the present moment instead of worrying about
the past or future. Also, it requires you to observe your thoughts
without getting absorbed in them. If you are feeling sad about a certain
situation, it does not mean you are living a sad life. Finally, pay
attention to your bodily sensations, such as breathing and moving, to
remind yourself that you are more than just your emotions and
thoughts. Once you master mindfulness, you will be able to recognise
patterns, improve your behaviour, and maintain your inner peace.
Q25: The passage is mainly about……………………… .

Ⓓ Activities to help you be more mindful
Q28: People who practise mindfulness can…………….. .
Ⓐ never feel peaceful
Ⓑ be misguided by their positive thoughts
Ⓒ stop bad things from happening to them
Ⓓ cleverly react to life’s difficult situations
Q29: According to the passage, living and enjoying the present
moment ………….
Ⓐ means you hate the past
Ⓑ helps a person worry less
Ⓒ does not mean you are sad
Ⓓ improves your physical strength
Q30: Which of the following is not correct?
Ⓐ Being mindful makes you recognise your emotions.
Ⓑ You are not defined by your thoughts and emotions.
Ⓒ Handling thoughts and emotions requires holding on to them first.
Ⓓ Your mood is affected by how well you control your negative
thoughts.
Q31: You need to have mental ……. to be able to control your
thoughts and feelings.
Ⓐhealth Ⓑawareness Ⓒ patterns Ⓓ exhaustion
Q32: It can be inferred from the text that………………………. .

Read the passage and choose the correct answer from a,
b, c or d:
People like to make predictions, and what life will be like in
the future is one area that a particularly large number of
people make predictions about. As we make predictions
about the future from our point of view today, it can be
interesting to look back at what people in the past predicted
and notice which predictions were accurate and which were
not and the reasons why this is. Fifty years ago, there was a
sense that people in the future would become more
concerned about protecting the environment than they were
at the time. However, all those years ago, when people
thought of protecting the environment, they tended to
see this in terms of picking up litter and recycling plastic
bottles. This contrasts with attitudes to environmental
protection today which focus on not traveling at all or as far
by aeroplane or petrol-fuelled cars and trying to reduce the
amount of clothes or plastic packaging you consume. On the
subject of transport, some people living fifty years ago
expected that we would be driving in the air instead of the
roads now. There were indeed plans to create a flying car
back then, but the idea never really took off and seemed
impractical. The idea that flying cars would spell an end to
traffic jams also seems somewhat unrealistictoday. There
were predictions that technology in general would become a
more important part of our everyday lives, and these have
proven to be correct. People living fifty years ago expected
that items such as computers would become lighter and
more compact in the future, for example, and this has
happened. On the other hand, there was a belief
that everyone would have a robot to do all of their housework
in their home and this has proven to be incorrect.

70 According to the passage, a particularly large
number of people like to make predictions about
....................
a the future aspects of life.
b the difference between life now and in the future.
c the same issues people predicted in the past.
d what we won’t be able to do in the future.
71 According to the passage, in today’s attitudes, which
aim at protecting the
environment, focus on ....................
a using ships instead of planes. b preventing the production
of new cars.
c avoiding travelling by petrol-fuelled means of transport.
d prohibiting cutting down more trees.
72 According to the passage, we should reduce the
amount of clothes or plastic
packaging we consume to ....................
a avoid recycling. b decrease consumption.
c save more money. d protect the environment.
73 “But the idea never really took off and seemed
impractical.” In this sentence, “take off” means ...............
a the opposite of "land". b the opposite of "put on"
c make a great success. d cause heavy losses.
74 According to the passage, driving in the air instead of
on the roads ....................
a proved to be the only solution to protect the environment.
b was not a practical solution to protect the environment.
c was completely successful d was not suggested by anyone
75 What is the main idea of the second paragraph
passage?
a Fifty years ago, people’s concern about the environment
was the same as today.
b The amount of clothes or plastic packaging we consume is
the primary cause of pollution.

9
c Fifty years ago, people’s concern about keeping the
environment was based on the focus
on not travelling at all or as far by aeroplane or petrol-fuelled
cars.
d Fifty years ago, people’s concern about the environment
was different from today's
attitude, which focused on not travelling at all or as far by
aeroplane or in petrol-fuelled
cars.
76 Predictions about the progress of technology
....................
a came true in most cases.
b were more than expected.
c haven’t been achieved yet.
d came true concerning having a robot at home.
