MAGNETIC PARTICLE EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
DATE 11-May-2010 SHEET 3 OF 10
OF PROCESS PIPING
1. SCOPE
This procedure describes the methods and requirements for magnetic particle
examination by using AC electromagnetic yoke technique with wet particle in Menzel
Ledjmet East Project Block 405b, Algeria.
The material for examination is limited to carbon steel and other ferromagnetic
material with temperature not more than 135°F (57°C).
2. REFERENCE
♦ MLEG-00-SP-P-00OO22 PROCESS PIPING - GENERAL WELDING
SPECIFICATION
♦ Piping Materials Specification J828A-L-SP-14000
♦ ASME Sections V Nondestructive Examination Art.7 and 25
♦ ASME B31.3 Process Piping
3.1. All personnel, who perform magnetic particle examination (MT), shall be qualified in
accordance with ASNT/SNT-TC-1A or an equivalent standard. The qualification
certificate for each examiner shall be available at site.
3.2. A person, who perform the examination and interpret the test results, shall be
qualified as level-II or level-III. A level I person can take the examination, subject he is
under the direct supervision of a Level-II or Level-III.
4. EQUIPMENT
4.1.2 An A.C. electro-magnetic yoke shall be used as equipment for the magnetic particle
examination. A movable legs type yoke may be used to fit a particular contour of a
material for examination.
4.1.3 The yoke shall have a capability to lifting a weight of at least 10 1bs (4.5KG) at the
maximum pole space to be used for the examination, otherwise it shall be repaired or
discarded. The weight shall be checked by a scale from a reputable manufacturer as
specified by ASME code Sec. V, Article 7. The lifting test shall be witnessed by
inspector.
The lifting test for a yoke shall be performed once in a year, or after its major
maintenance.

4.2. Black Light
4.1.4 A black light, if used, shall be capable of developing ultra-violet light of wavelength
330-390nm and provides intensity at the examination surface of 1000μw/cm2.
4.1.5 The black light intensity shall be verified by using a black light meter at least once
every 8 hours, or the work area is changed, or the light bulb is changed.
4.1.6 The black light shall be cleaned and checked daily. If the filter is broken or with
cracks, it shall be replaced immediately.
Light meters (both visible and black light meters) shall be used to check light intensity,
if so required. The light meters shall be calibrated by a government authorized
laboratory at least once a year or whenever the meter has been repaired.
5 SURFACE CONDITION
5.1 Satisfactory results are usually obtained for magnetic particle examination when the
surface is in the as welded or as rolled condition. However, if surface irregularities
could mask the indications due to defects, the surface shall be well dressed by
grinding.
5.2 Prior to magnetic particle examination, the surface to be examined and its adjacent
area, within at least 1’’(25mm), shall be dry, clean and free of all dirt, grease, lint,
scales, welding flux, spatter, oil or other extraneous matter that could interfere with
the examination.
6 EXAMINATION MEDIUM
The particles shall be suspended in water, in which water conditioner has been
dissolved.
The wet medium shall be prepared as per vendor recommendation and ASME Sec.
V, Article 25, SE-709, Magnetic particle examination standard.

6.3 Particle type
a) Non-fluorescent particle
The colour of the particle shall provide adequate contrast with the surface being
examined, usually is black or reddish brown.
b) Fluorescent particle
6.4 The temperature of the wet particle suspension and the surface of the part shall not
exceed 135°F (57°C).
6.5 A prepared wet particle suspension shall be used only within 24 hours. Beyond that
period the suspension shall be discarded.
7.1 Before start magnetic particle examination in each shift, it is necessary to verify the
adequacy or direction of the magnetic field and the particle medium suitability by
using an artificial flaw shim, as per ASME Section V, Article 7, T-753.
7.2 If a clearly defined line of magnetic particles forms on the shim face when the
magnetic particles are applied simultaneously with the magnetizing force to the
examination area, the magnetic examination system shall be acceptable for
operation, the A.C yoke and magnetic particle medium can be used, otherwise the
system shall be re-established and re-verified.
8 PROCEDURE
a) Apply a layer of white coating to the cleaned examination surface for colour
contrast enhancement, if so required.

c) Apply magnetic particle solution on to the area (continuous technique).
d) Hold the magnetic field for 5 seconds to allow particle migration before
withdrawal of the yoke.
e) Examine the surface indications on the area carefully to detect any flaws.
♦ For each examination area, the above steps, from b) to e), shall be repeated at
least twice with the yoke positioned in such an orientation that they are
perpendicular to each other to ensure the defect in different direction is
delectable.
♦ The examination area shall have a sufficient overlap to its adjacent one, so that
100% coverage at the required sensitivity can be obtained.
a) The examiner shall be in the darkened area for at least 5 minutes to adapt to dark
viewing before start the examination.
b) The black light shall be warmed up for 5 minutes to provide an enough ultraviolet
intensity for the examination area.
9 INTERPRETATION
9.1 Discontinuities on or near the surface are indicated by retention of the examination
medium. Care shall be taken to distinguish relevant indication from non-relevant
indication and false indication. If so required, the surface re-dressing and/or re-
examination shall be conducted. Broad areas of particle accumulation which might
mask indications from discontinuities are prohibited, and such areas shall be cleaned
and re-examined.
9.2 Only a person qualified as level II or level III is allowed to interpret the examination
results.
9.3 All relevant indications shall be evaluated in terms of the acceptance standards of the
reference specification and code in paragraph 10 as applicable.
