(D) INTERCEPTION AND DIVERSION WORKS :
Peak
S Measured Discharge (MLD) Factor
No Minimum Maximum Average Adopted
1 5.710 24.900 11.070 2.25
Tapping Arrangement
It is proposed to divert the dry weather flow of Drain into grit removal channel through
screen chamber by constructing cross weir across the drain with proportional flow weir and
ultimately to the gravity sewer from where it is carried to MPS/STP for treatment and
disposal.
Diversion Channel
To divert the flow of drain into the conveyor sewer line through screening and grit chamber,
a cross overflow weir is proposed just down stream side of proposed tapping point with
suitable opening arrangement to divert the discharge in the river during non pumping
period.
Design of weir
i Peak discharge of drain for design year 2048 in MLD in lps in M3/s
= 24.90 288.19 0.2882
ii Width of drain at tapping point = 3.00 m
iii G.L. of tapping point = 98.330 m
iv Invert Level of Drain at tapping point = 95.040 m
v Depth of Drain from GL = 3.29 m
vi Slope of Drain = 1 in 1000
Invert Level of Drain at tapping point = 95.04 m
GL of Tapping point = 98.33 m
A R 2 / 3 S 1/ 2
Using Mannings Formula Q =
n
where Q = Discharge in m3/s
A = Area of flow = B x H
B = Width of drain
H = Depth of flow
R = Hydraulic Radius
= A/P (P=Wetted Perimeter)
P = B + 2H
Mannings Coefficient n = 0.015
S = Slope
(3 x H) x [(3 x H) / (3 + 2H)]^2/3) x (1/1000)^1/2
0.2882 =
0.015
Solving For H by hit and trial, let H = 0.1848
So Q - (A x (R) x (S) )/n
2/3 1/2
= 0.000 nearly equal to zero
adopting H = 0.18 m
Depth of weir provided at main drain = 0.50 m
Margin for silt = 32 cm
Hence provide 50 cm deep weir at main nala with 32 cm margin for silting, provided with sluice gate.
2 Tapping/Approach Channel
i Assuming width of channel = 1.75 m
ii Slope of channel = 1 in 500
iii Depth of flow = H
iv Peak Q = 0.2882 m3/s
assuming width of channel = 1.75 m
Slope of channel = 1 in 500
= 500
Depth of flow = H
Solving For H by hit and trial let H = 0.1905
So Q - (A x (R) x (S) )/n
2/3 1/2
= 0.000 nearly equal to zero
v Adopted depth of flow H = 0.20 m
Providing a drop of = 10 cm in tapping channel
vi R.L. of chanel bed at tapping point = 95.04 - 0.1
= 94.94 m
Hence provide a tapping channel of size 1.75 m width and 1.41 m length with a drop of
10 cm in channel at tapping point, including 1 no. sluice gate of size 1.75 m x 1.0 m size
3 Design of Screen
The design is being done as per appendix 2 page A-78 of the manual of sewerage and sewage treatment
i Peak discharge in Design year (2048) Q = 0.2882 cum/s
ii Design velocity through screen V = 0.80 m/s
iii Net area of screen openings Q/V = 0.360 Sqm
Adopting thickness of screen bars = 10 mm (20 mm wide)
and clear spacing between bars = 20 mm
iv Gross area = 0.5404 Sqm
v Velocity after screen = 0.5333 m/s
vi Head loss through screen = 0.0259 m
vii Head loss through half clogged screen = 0.1659 m
viii Screen is to be provided at an angle of 75 degrees to the horizontal, then
Gross area of screen = 0.5594 Sqm
ix Height of screen required = 0.309 m
say = 0.31 m
x No of bars required = 59 nos.
Hence provide a manual screen 1.75 m wide X 3.39 m high, so that screen top remains above peak level.
Screen will be made of 20 x 10 mm flats with clear opening of 20 mm & kept at 80 degrees to horizontal.
Vs i
Q/A =
(1 ) i 1
Desired efficiency of removal of desired particles h = 0.75
Measured settling basin performance i = 0.125 for v.good performance
So desired SOR Q/A = 959.056 Cum/Sqm/d
= 0.0111 m/s
vi Calculation of dimension of Grit chamber
Plan area of grit chamber A = Q/(SOR)
= 25.9630 Sqm.
So providing 2channels of length = 7.00 m
width of each channel required = 1.90 m
Also once the particles are settled they should not come into suspension.
Therefore Vh (horizontal flow velocity) should be kept less than Vc (critical displacement velocity)
In actual practice Vh of 0.15 m/s to 0.30 m/s is used at peak flow and HRT (Hydraulic
Retention Time) should be greater than or equal to 60 sec
Let HRT = 65 sec
So depth of flow = Vs x HRT
= 0.7215 m
So horizontal velocity Vh = Peak Q/ X-Sectional Area
= 0.1051 m/s
Vc = 0.1609 m/s
Vh < Vc Hence OK
vii Quantity of Grit
Quantity of Grit from combined sewage is 0.06 to 0.12 Cum./ml
Taking quantity of grit as = 0.06 cum/ml
Average discharge per day = 11.07 MLD
Quantity of silt per day = 0.66 cum
Quantity of silt for 15 days = 9.96 cum
Depth of silt deposition = 0.37 m
Hence total depth = 1.26 m
Therefore provide 3 channels each 7 m long 1.9 m wide and 1.48 m deep including 1
channel as standby with freeboard of 0.22 m.
Invert Level of grit chamber bed = 93.878 m
It shall be made of 6 mm thick S.S. sheet seperately for each grit chamber. The water level
at D/S of weir will be such that the weir does not function in submerge state.

It is proposed to divert the dry weather flow of Drain into grit removal channel through
screen chamber by constructing cross weir across the drain with proportional flow weir and
ultimately to the gravity sewer from where it is carried to MPS/STP for treatment and
disposal.
Diversion Channel
To divert the flow of drain into the conveyor sewer line through screening and grit chamber,
a cross overflow weir is proposed just down stream side of proposed tapping point with
suitable opening arrangement to divert the discharge in the river during non pumping
period.
