ENERGY, WORK, POWER

Work:
 Work is the product of a force and the distance moved by its point of
application in the direction of the force
 Work = force x distance moved in direction of force = f x s
 Its unit is Joules (J)
 Work done is a scalar quantity

Joules:
 A joule is the work done when the point of application of a force of 1 newton
moves through a distance of 1 metre in the direction of the force.
 1 Joule = 1 Newton x 1 Metre

Energy:
 Energy is the ability to do work
 The unit of energy is the joule (J)
 There are different types of energy such as:

1
Kinetic Energy- The energy a body has due to its motion. EK = 2 mv2

Potential Energy – The energy a body has due to its position or state.
EP = mgh

Power:
 Power is the rate of doing work or using energy.
Work
 Power = time
 The unit of power is Watt (W)
 1 W = 1 Joule per second
