Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Technical Vocational Education 7 Project CAP-LRE Alternative Delivery

Mode (ADM) Module on Performing Simple Technical Sketching According to the Task
Requirements!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both from
public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning
activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire
the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of the
module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will
help you in guiding the learners

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also
need to keep track of the learners’ progress while allowing them to manage their own
learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and the learners as they do the tasks
included in the module.

For the Learner:

After learning the safety precautions and use of tools, it is important for every
student to become aware on the different graphical illustrations used in electrical activities.
Graphical illustrations in electrical activities are in the form of electrical symbols. Electrical
symbols are used to make a diagram. In this module, you will learn how each symbol is
used and how they are used.

Every student has to learn the different electrical signs and symbols in order for
them to understand the graphical representation of different electrical devices used in a
building. These electrical signs and symbols are printed on the so called “blueprint” of a
building and is kept in a safety place for easy access when the time requires retrieval
especially during the time a problem would arise.

The activities in this module are arranged from simple to complex to help the learner
gradually master the desired learning competency. Give him/her the needed support
and guidance so that he /she will be able to perform the tasks to prepare him/her
later on performing simple technical sketching according to the task requirements.

Electrical Symbols

Electrical Symbols are graphical illustrations or drawings applied to represent

numerous electrical devices in a particular diagram or plan in an electrical circuit. Different
electrical works like, sketching schematic diagram, and diagrams require the use of these
electrical symbols.

The National Building Code of the Philippines ( PD 1096) requires a person or group
of person planning to build a house or any infrastructure to secure an electrical plan. An
electrical plan uses various electrical symbols. These electrical symbols guides an electrical

4
engineer or master electrician on how a particular electrical devices be placed in a specific
place of the house or infrastructure.

There are numerous electrical symbols used for electrical plan. The list of electrical
symbols is in table 1.

Electrical Signs
Electrical Signs are graphical illustration or drawings intended to warn the user of a
particular equipment or machine on the possible harm it would cause upon using it. The
purpose of electrical signs is to alert a person on the possible hazard he/she may encounter
and experience upon using the object bearing the given symbol. There are different
electrical signs and these are:

6
Electrical Sign Description
Caution. This “Caution” sign is used to give viewers
precautionary measures against the possible hazard a
person may encounter upon reaching the point from which
it is placed.

Safety Alert. This sign conveys to its viewers to observe

extra awareness.

Prohibition. This sign is purposed to prohibit any activity

on the place it is located.

Danger. The Danger sign gives the idea to the viewers

that there would be a hazardous situation and it could
lead to serious injury or worst is death.

Warning. This sign specifically tells the viewer that there

is a potential hazardous event that may happen.

Read the understand instruction manual. This sign

encourages the user of a particular tool, equipment or
machine to read the manual before engaging to any
activity.

Wear eye protection. The sign indicates a person is

required to wear safety goggles or any eye protection.

Electrical Hazard. The sign intended for the observer to

become aware on the existence of electrical hazard within
the area.

Voltage Danger. The given sign indicates the presence of

high voltage within the area from which it is placed.

7
Electrical Wiring Diagram

It is a graphical illustration of different electrical devises arranged in orderly manner

to manage the flow of electricity in a particular connection. This wiring diagram serves as a
distinct path from which electricity may flow and be controlled by certain devices. There are
two types of diagram and these are pictorial diagram and schematic diagram.

1. Pictorial Diagram - an illustration of a circuit wherein the real image of the given
parts of a circuit is used.

Table 1. Pictorial Diagram of a Simple Circuit.

2. Schematic Diagram - an illustration of a circuit wherein it uses standard electrical

symbols.

Table 2. Schematic Diagram of a Simple Circuit

8
Electrical Circuit

An electrical circuit is a path from which electricity may continuously flow. A circuit
has 4 parts and these are:

Table 3. A simple circuit and its different parts

in pictorial and schematic diagram.

1. Path. This serves as the way from which electrons and atoms travel from the
source to the load. Commonly, wire serves as the path for electricity.
2. Load. This part of a circuit is the current consuming ones. Commonly, the
load in a circuit is represented by light bulbs.
3. Means of Control. The means of control is the part of a circuit in-charge in controlling
the flow of current within the circuit. This function is performed by a switch.
4. Source. The source of electricity is the part of a circuit with the purpose of
producing current within the circuit to supply with the load. There are two main
source of current and these are alternating current and direct current.

 Direct Current - produces consistent amount of current within the circuit.

Batteries commonly supply direct current.
 Alternating Current - produces varying amount of current. The electricity
brought by MERALCO supplies alternating current
.

9
Two Types of Electrical Circuit

1. Series Circuit. It is a wiring system from which the lamps and receptacles are arranged
and connected to one another. In this circuit the amount of current is divided among
the number of its load. There is only one path for current to flow when a bulb is
damaged, the bulbs preceding the damaged will not be supplied by current.

Table 4.
Schematic and Pictorial Diagram of a Series Circuit.

2. Parallel Circuit. It is a wiring system from which the lamps and receptacles are
arranged and connected across or parallel to the wire. In this circuit the amount of
current is the same amount. The advantage of using this kind of circuit has an
advantage because even if one of the bulb is damaged the bulb next to it will still
function.

Independent Activity 1

Directions: Below is the illustration of a Venn Diagram. Venn diagram is a form of graphic
organizer used to consolidate certain details or information of some variable.
Using the diagram, write the differences and similarities of electrical symbols
and electrical signs. On the light area of the circle you will write the description
or definition of electrical symbols while on other circle, which is darker, you will
write the description or definition of electrical signs. On the middle, which is
overlapped, you will write the description similar to both electrical symbols and
electrical signs.

Independent Assessment 1

Direction: Identify weather the given statement describes electrical symbol or electrical sign.
If the statement is describing electrical symbol draw a star while if it
describes electrical sign draw a circle . Draw your answer on the space
provided before each number.
