about a question, simply state that something seems off but you are unsure of what—then go see
your professor for help on your understanding of this essay.

1. Is the essay in MLA format? If not, what suggestions can you make to the author to
get it to MLA format? Here is the link to OWL Purdue MLA so you can check:
https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_st
yle_guide/mla_general_format.html

Yes, the essay is in MLA format. The only thing that I noticed is that in your work cited
page you might have accidentally added a space before adding your work sites.

2. Does the essay include a controlling idea that is not obvious to everyone? In other
words, does it reveal something not everyone would know about the meaning of the
image? Does the author make a claim that includes an interpretation about this
visual text? Is this claim clear and direct? What is it? What suggestions do you have
for the writer in order to strengthen the claim? Highlight the controlling idea and
tell the author if it reveals new information to you or not.

The author has a controlling idea that is not obvious to everyone. It reveals what the
different elements of the poster could symbolize and what could be the meaning of why
the poster includes those elements. The author also includes a claim that is clear and
direct. Her claim is stated in the first paragraph in the last sentence.

3. Where can the author develop more of an analysis or more fully develop the ideas?
In other words, does the author present a definition of the image or a summary or is
the author explaining to readers their analysis of the image? Indicate in the text
where the author is summarizing and where the author is analyzing.

Yes, the author is summarizing and analyzing the image to the readers. For example, in
her introduction she makes sure to present a definition of the poster and makes a strong
controlling idea. In most of her paragraphs she explains to the reader her analysis of the
poster and by using evidence from the poster.

4. Has the author chosen one (and only one) image to analyze? Does the author
indicate the image in the introduction? Does the author include the image in the
introduction?
Yes, the author has chosen one image to analyze and indicates the image in the
introduction. The author also includes the image in the introduction.

5. Does the author use elements from the image as evidence to support the claim in
every paragraph? If not, indicate in each paragraph where the author should
include more evidence.

tangents that you find in the essay.

Yes, the essay maintains a cohesive focus around the controlling idea. I did not find any
tangents in the essay.

7. Is the tone and language appropriate for your English 1301 class? If not, suggest for
the author what changes they might make.

8. Does the conclusion answer the three questions (Did I do what I said I would do?;
Why is this important?; and What do I want my audience to do with this
information?)

Yes, I believe the author’s conclusion answers the three questions. Although I believe she
could have given more detail on what she wants her audience to do with this information.
