Research Genre 2 Peer Review Workshop: Content

Directions: Mark your responses directly onto the paper you are editing. Or you can write your answers here. If
you are unsure, state that something seems off, but you are uncertain.

1. Is the essay in MLA format? If not, what suggestions can you give the author to get it to MLA format?
Here is the link to OWL Purdue MLA so you can check:
https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_gene
ral_format.html
This essay is in MLA format, as I went into the link given and checked off all of it.

2. Does the author make a claim (thesis statement) about the connections and disagreements of the research
in the field on their chosen topic? Does this claim reveal something about the varying perspectives on
the topic? What is the thesis statement? Mark it in the essay.

The author’s claim is about how abortion affects women physically and mentally. The author
further describes the connections between different viewpoints on abortion.

3. Is the author’s thesis statement clear and direct? Does it make a claim about the findings and come at the
end of the literature review? If not, give the author suggestions for revision.

The author's thesis statement can be a little more straightforward so the reader can understand
what you're trying to talk about. It does make a claim about the subject (abortion) and how there
are different viewpoints on it, and it does come at the end of the literature review.

4. Does the author present an argument for the topic? Or, does the author give an argument for the
differing perspectives of the topic? If they argue the topic, offer revision suggestions so s/he can present
the differing viewpoints on this topic.

The author’s argument for this topic and the main thing she talks about is the different viewpoints
of abortion, and she presents arguments for the different perspectives.

5. Does the author use correctly cited paraphrases, summaries, or direct quotations from his/her sources as
evidence? Where could the author use more?

The author can use more quotes throughout the paper since I feel like there could be more in the
body paragraphs. The author should cite exactly what quote she used from where she got it in the
paper.

6. Are the sources peer-reviewed? Mark them in the text. Tell the author if the sources are not peer-
reviewed so they know to find other sources.

They are all peer-reviewed sources. She needs to add quotes and cite them in her paper. Or
paraphrase if possible.

7. Where could the author use more detail to illustrate his/her claim further? Where could the author use
examples to demonstrate his/her point? Mark these in the text.

She gives a lot of detail, so I don’t think she needs more detail. The author already demonstrates
many points in the paper.

8. Does the author maintain objectivity during his/her essay? Does the author establish his/her ethos as an
author? How can he/she be more reliable? Mark in the text where the author tends to be subjective.

The author does maintain objectivity throughout her paper. She does establish her points as an
author. She can be more reliable showing exactly where she got her information more and cite it
in the paragraph.

9. Does the author have solid topic sentences that contain only one main point? Does the author maintain
that focus throughout the paragraph? Give revision suggestions to the author so that s/he can revise for
cohesion.

The author doesn’t have solid topic sentences since some paragraphs discuss more than one
subject. However, the author does keep the focus throughout her paper talking about abortion.
The author should go through the paragraphs to make sure she maintains the same topic and the
same idea about it.

10. How is the essay organized? Did the author manage it based upon the articles or did the author organize
the essay based upon ideas? Remember, the author should organize his/her essay so that the perspectives
in the research are in conversation with each other. Give revision suggestions to the author so that s/he
can revise for cohesion.

The author organized it off ideas that came to her head. The author should use more quotes and
put in her work cited page exactly where she got her information from and mention it in the
paper.

11. What are three things that this author does very well?

The author explains things very well and in detail. The author gives a bunch of more information
about the subject. The author describes many things in detail.

12. What are three revision suggestions you have for the writer?

To simplify some of the paragraphs since they could be a bit too long and the reader might not
find them as interesting. To add more quotes to exactly show different points of view of what
actual people who have spoken for or against abortion or have been through it. Too double check
the format and make sure its correct.

Post in the discussion board after completion.
