Unit 3 Peer Review Workshop: Content

answers here. If you are unsure, simply state that something seems off but you are unsure of
what.

1. Does the author present a thesis statement about the rhetorical effectiveness of a peer-
reviewed article? Is this thesis clear and direct? What is it? Mark it in the text. What
suggestions do you have for the writer in order to strengthen the thesis? Has the author
chosen one (and only one) peer-reviewed article to analyze?
a. The author does present a thesis statement about the rhetorical effectiveness of the
peer-reviewed article. The thesis comes off as clear and direct. In their thesis the
author states that the rhetorical choices used in the article support the argument
against scientism by using to logic, emotions, and addressing common
misconceptions The author could provide more detail and slightly more specific
previews of the rhetorical strategies used by the article. The author did chose one
peer-reviewed article to analyze.

2. Does the essay include a controlling idea that is not obvious to everyone? In other words,
does it reveal something not everyone would know about how and why this peer-
reviewed article is used? Where can the author develop more of an analysis or more fully
develop the ideas?
a. Yes, the essay introduces a less obvious controlling idea by criticizing the
rhetorical strategies in a peer-reviewed article countering scientism. More detailed
examples of the Rhetorical devices used and their objectives could help portray
their analysis

3. Does the author use elements from the article to support the thesis made about it? What
are they? Mark them in the text. Are they used as good evidence? Indicate why or why
not in the text. What kind of evidence would help the writer demonstrate his/her point?
a. The author uses elements from the article to support their thesis. They use
examples of rhetorical strategies like Logos, Pathos, and Fallacies. These
examples are used well but could use more specific examples and concrete
support.
4. Does the essay maintain a cohesive focus around the thesis? Does the author use solid
transitions to guide his/her ideas? Determine, as a reader, how you want to be presented
with the information. Does the organization work for you? Indicate suggestions for
organization and transitions. Also, mark any tangents that you find in the essay.
a. The essay does maintain a cohesive focus on the thesis. The authors transitions
are clear and concise but could be smoother and varied. The information is
presented in an organized manner that I found easy to understandable. Maybe
have the paragraphs lead into a little smoother than just numbering them with first
second etc.it didn’t feel like there were any serious tangents.
5. Where could the author use more detail to further illustrate his/her claim? Indicate these
places in the text.
a. The author could provide more specific examples of the articles use of Logos
Pathos and its use of Fallacies in it arguments.
6. Are the introduction and conclusion focused on the main point of the essay? Does the
conclusion answer the three questions? (1. Did I do what I said I would do? 2. Why is this
important? 3. What do I want my audience to do with this information?)
a. I believe the introduction and conclusion are focused on the essays main points.
The conclusion answers the 3 questions but could touch more on what they want
their audience to do with the information.
7. Indicate in the text the author’s strengths and weaknesses.
a. The authors strengths are in their effective analysis and discussion of the
rhetorical choice used, they clearly organize their analysis into logos, pathos, and
fallacies,
their weaknesses are found in their presentation of more specific examples and
their use of transitions.
8. What three revision suggestions do you have for the writer?
a. Make a deeper analysis, improve transitions,

a. In their explanations of the rhetorical devices used with more specific examples of
logos, pathos, and fallacies. And how they connect to each other.

a. In their presentation of the articles use of logos, pathos, and fallacies. And a more
detailed examination of their impact on the reader.

11. Indicate in the text three places where the author deserves praise for this essay.
a. The author should be praised in their analysis of the rhetorical devices used, how
clear their arguments are, and their overall organization of their ideas.
1. How is the essay organized? Does each paragraph contain one and only one main idea
that connects to the thesis? Does this organization help move the ideas forward? Tell the
author if the organization works or offer organization ideas.
b. The essay is organized into sections analyzing logos, pathos, and the use of
fallacies. Each paragraph does focus on one main idea connected to their thesis.
The authors organization does well to move their ideas forward and works.

12. Where could the author use stronger transitions to strengthen connections between his/her
points?
a. At the beginning of their paragraphs

the rule, then simply mention that something seems off.

places in the text.
a. More detailed analysis of rhetorical strategies with more specific examples
15. Are the style and tone of the essay appropriate for the audience?
a. The style and tone come off as appropriate for academic audiences.

16. Are the sentences and word choices varied? Does the author use strong, active verbs and
solid, descriptive nouns? Indicate where the author could strengthen the verbs and nouns.
a. I believe the sentences and word choice show good variety and use of strong,
active verbs and solid descriptive nouns. The author could strengthen the
beginning transitions of paragraphs into more varied styles.

17. Is the author too repetitive or present too much information? In other words, does the
essay overwhelm you as a reader because there is too much information or underwhelm
you because there is too little information?
a. The author does not present too much information nor do they overwhelm or
underwhelm the reader. They present a good balance.

18. Is the essay confusing because information has been omitted and/or too much information
is assumed to be known by the readers?
a. The essay does not seem confusing due to lack of information or too much
information.

19. Is the essay in the correct MLA format?


The essay appears to be in proper MLA format

a. The author provides strong clarity in their ideas, analysis, and organization
