COT 2 LESSON PLAN

Science 5
January 24, 2023
I. Objectives
A. Content Standards
The interactions for survival among living and non-living things that take place in estuaries and
intertidal zones

B. Performance Standards
Create a hypothetical community to show how organisms interact and reproduce to survive

C. Most Essentials Competencies

a. Identify why estuaries and intertidal zones are important
b. Show awareness about the importance of protecting and conserving estuaries and
intertidal environment
c. Explain the need to protect and conserve estuaries and intertidal zones (S5LT–Ii–j–10)

II. Content

Topic: “Protect and Conserve Estuaries and Intertidal Zones”

III. Learning Resources

A. References
1. Teacher’s Guide
 K to 12 Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) p. 381
 Conceptual Science and Beyond K to 12 Edition 5 p. 93
 Quarter 2 – Module 7: Conservation and Protection of Estuaries and Intertidal Zones
 Science Module 9 Protecting and Conserving Our Intertidal Zones and Estuaries

2. Learners’ Materials
 Pivot 4A Learner’s Material Quarter 2 Science G5
 Printed evaluation sheet

B. Other Learning Resources

Picture tarpapels, powerpoint presentation, TV, charts, name cards, printed activities and evaluation

C. Method: 4A’s

IV. Procedures
A. Preliminaries
1. Review
(Group the class: Boys vs. Girls)
Examine the illustration where the river flows and meets the sea, creating a flourishing estuarine
ecosystem. Give 5 biotic and 5 abiotic factors that you can find and write their names on the
provided charts.
Biotic Factors Abiotic Factors

2. Motivation

Look at the two pictures. Which of these pictures show a healthy body of water and
which shows an unhealthy one? Why?

What do you think will happen if estuaries and intertidal zones are destructed just like what you
see in the picture? Will it cause damage to the environment or to us humans? Is there a need for us
to protect and conserve these two?

So today, we will identify first why estuaries and intertidal zones are important and then let us see
if you can explain why there is a need for us to protect and conserve them.
B. Developmental Activities
Unlocking of Difficulties:
 Conserve – the care and protection of resources (estuaries, intertidal zones) so they can persist
for the future generations
 Protect – keep safe from harm and destruction

ACTIVITY

Directions: Form the puzzles and identify why estuaries and intertidal zones are valuable or important.

ANALYSIS

Teacher explains further.

Nursery
(many animals reproduce and spend the early part of their lives here
and source of food and shelter)

Filter
(filter out sediments and pollutants from rivers and streams before
they flow into the ocean, providing cleaner waters for humans and
marine life)
Attracts tourists
(employment opportunities are created)

ABSTRACTION

Now that we have established the importance of estuaries and intertidal zones, let me ask you a
question. Based on what we have talked earlier, why is do we need to protect and conserve estuaries
and intertidal zones?

(Give follow-up questions if necessary.)

We need to protect and conserve estuaries and intertidal zones:

 so marine animals and other biotic factors will still have a place to populate, find shelter and
food
 humans will also benefit on this because we’ll find food easily and a place to rest and relax
 so that sediments and pollutants will not flow directly to the ocean and we will still have clean
water to drink and use in our daily tasks
 for more employment so people or the locals will not feel the need to migrate to other places to
earn a living
 so the estuaries and intertidal zones can persist for the future generations

Values Integration:
As a young individual, how can you help keep our estuaries and intertidal zones clean? Give
examples.

APPLICATION

Directions: Use the graphic organizer. Write down 4 importance of estuaries and intertidal zones.
