 Take 0.1 as an example. Explain to the class the parts of a decimal
number. (the first place to the right of the decimal point is the
tenths place)
 Have a pupil come to the board and shade only one square on the
grid.
Ask:
2. What does the shaded part represent? (one hundredth)

 Explain to the class that the second place to the right of the
decimal point is the hundredths place.
 If the first place to the right of the decimal point is called
the tenths place and the second place to the right of the
decimal point is called the hundredths place, what do you
think the third place to the decimal point called? (the
thousandths place)

DISCUSSIONS:
A decimal point separates the whole number and the decimal part
of a decimal number. It is read as “and”. Thus, the decimal number
35.008 is read as “thirty-five and eight thousandths.
To write a word name for decimal notation:
1. Write a word name for the whole number (the number on the left of
the decimal point)
2. Write the word “and” for the decimal point.
3. Write a word name for the number on the right of the decimal point,
followed by the place value of the last digit.
