Individual Assignment No.1

1. Discuss the meanings of Fluid Power with its classification. Give at least 3 practical
application of fluid power.
2. Explain the meaning of Bernoulli’s equation and how it affects the flow of liquid in a
hydraulic circuit with a practical example.
3. A hydraulic pump delivers 1.5 gpm through a ½ in. diameter pipe. The oil has an absolute
viscosity μ=110 cP and a specific gravity SG = 0.9. Do we have laminar flow or turbulent
flow? Convert the units into SI system of units.

Notice: Only hand written solution is accepted.

Answer 1

Fluid power is the transmission of forces and motions using a confined, pressurized fluid.

Fluid power is the use of fluids under pressure to generate, control, and transmit power.

Can be subdivided into:

 Hydraulic

 Pneumatic

In hydraulic fluid power systems oils (petrolium, synthetic oils) the most commonly used fluid
but less commonly water can also be used.

In pneumatic fluid power system the working fluid is air

Answer 2

The Bernoulli equation states that,

 points 1 and 2 lie on a streamline,

 the fluid has constant density,
 the flow is steady, and
 there is no friction.

Within a horizontal flow of fluid, points of higher fluid speed will

have less pressure than points of slower fluid speed
