Proposed Title:
Investigation on the Application of Natural fiber (sisal) and Red ash (scoria) as weak Subgrade soil
reinforcement. In case of Adama – Awash Phase 1 Expressway project
Statement of the Problem/Background of the research:
The road which is constructed in In Adama – Awashe Expressway road project is unsuitable soil which
does not fulfill the subgrade soil requirement specified in the design and this require removal and
replacement of the soil with other suitable material which leads to the increase in project cost and
duration. Thus, a remedial action should be taken aimed at mitigating the ongoing problem in the
road construction considering the quality, cost and duration of the project by using economical soil
stabilization technique.
In Ethiopia limited researches were done in soil reinforcement by using natural fiber and scoria this
topic will help to discuss the combined effect of natural fiber and scoria on properties of weak subgrade
soil mixed into different proportions to improve the subgrade soil performance.

Research Objective:
The main objective of this research is to determine the effect of Natural fiber(sisal) and Red ash(scoria) in
subgrade soil strength and to determine the optimum fiber and red ash content to improve soil property.
Rational/Significance of the research:
This study aims to investigate the combination effect of Natural fiber (sisal) and Red ash (scoria) to
improve a weak soil and will give an alternative and economical method of soil reinforcement by
using a combination effect of natural fiber and red ash.

Methodology: (Clearly state the research method and/ approach that you will follow)
To complete the research work experimental method of study will be followed which include:-
 Collection of sample from the site.
 Preparation of samples for each laboratory test.
 Laboratory test to characterize natural untreated soil.
 Laboratory test of fiber and red ash treated soil at different percentage of fiber and red ash to
determine optimum fiber and red ash content
 Laboratory test of soil with optimum fiber content and red ash.
