Self Inductance
Q
Q
Self inductance

When the switch is closed, the

current doesn’t change immediately
from 0 to its max value.
The current increases with time,
so, the magnetic flux due to this
current increases.
The change in the flux induces emf
opposes the change in the flux.

The net potential difference = 𝜺 − 𝜺𝒊𝒏𝒅

Gradually, 𝜺𝒊𝒏𝒅 decreases and the

current increases
Self inductance

The current produces

magnetic field to left

the flux increases, the flux decreases,

the coil acts as source of emf the coil acts as source of emf

L is called the coefficient of self inductance
(-) since the change in the current induces emf opposite the
change
Self inductance

𝜺 = −𝑳
∆𝒕
If the current increases, ∆𝑰 is positive, the induced emf is
negative
If the current decreases, ∆𝑰 is negative, the induced emf is
positive

Unit of L is Henry (H)
